State of Illinois, have invented certain new f a -d useful Improvementsin Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a convertible twin bed' device including a pair of relatively movabl'ebed frames capable of lateral adjustment Y to form a double-sized bed when occupying one position with respect to eachV other, and to form two single-size beds when occupying another position with respect to each other; to provide improvedtrack members for supporting said bed frames on a standard form of bedstead ;l to provide improved end members for slidably supporting saidbed frames on said trackmembers; to provide improved means on said trackmembers for retaining 'said bed frames in abutting relation; to provide an improved form of bracket on each end of said track members for retaining said bed frames in spaced relation; and to provide improved meansl for adjustably supporting said track members on said bedstead. y

The brackets 16 are secured to the track members by rivets 19, said track members being formed and indented laterally at their ends so that the flanges 17 lie with their outer faces flush with the sides thereof, the flanges 9 and the outer parts'of web 8 bein fut away accordingly. Flanges 20 are foi .ied on the brackets 16 at right angles to the flanges 17 and engage the lower surface of the track member 2 so as to reinforce the ends thereof and prevent any splitting by the rivets 19 when the members 2 are made of wood. The upper edges of the flanges 17 are recessed as at 21, adj acent the part 18 and in alinenient with the grooves le so Vas to form continuations thereof. Shoulders 22 are formed on the sides of the lianges 17 to strengthen the bracket and also to forni continuations of the shoulders 9 of the track members. The depending parts 23 ofthe flanges 17 are spaced inwardly fronithe recesses 15 so as to allow for the cutting of different sizes of recesses, depending upon the distance between the angle bars 5;

Each of the end'inembers 26 comprisesa channel-shaped Vmember 28 having a supporting bracket 29 integrally formed at each end thereof, said bracket 29 being detachably secured to the spring frame 25 by bolts 30. The lchannel-shaped members 28 are adapted to straddle the webs 8 of the track members and are slidable thereon, each of said members comprising a pair of depending flanges 31 disposed in parallel'spaced relation. The rollers are carried by pins supported on the flanges 31 and secured against displacement 'by Cotter pins 35. When the bed frames 3 and 1 are in abutting relation, the rollers 32 are located at the inner ends of the slots 11 and 12, and the rollers 33 are seated in the grooves 13. weight of each bed frame is evenly distributed or balanced over the angle bar upon wnich it rests, and so precludes the possibility of tilting when only one of the beds'is used. Moreover, the overhanging side 0f a section in this position projects so little relative to the width vand weight of the device as a whole, that there is no danger of tipping, even when one sits on the cuter edge.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numer-V ous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the followino claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a bedstead, a transversely disposed track member supported thereon,-a pair of bei frames, one of said bed frainesbeing laterally shiftable toward and away IfromY saidother frame, said track member having a longitudinally disposed slot Vformed therein, a roller carried' by said one frame and lslidable in said slot, a guideway formed onsaid track member and extending inwardly from one endthercof, a rolleip'carried by said one bed frame and slidable on said guideway, said guideway having a transversely disposed groove formed at the inner end thereof for receiving said last-mentioned roller, whereby said bed frames are retained in their abutting relation., said guideway havinga transversely disposed groove formed at the outer lend thereof for receiving said vlast-inentioned roller, whereby said bed fra-mes are retained in their spaced `relation.

In a device of the class described, a bedstead, a pair of transversely disposed track members adjustably supported in substantially parallel spaced relation on said bedstead, a pair of relatively shiftable bed frames slidably mounted on said track members and adapted to be laterally shifted toward and away from each other, said track members having longitudinally disposed slots formed therein, depending end members secured to each of said bed frames, rollers carried by said end members and slidable in said slots, guideways formed on said track members and extending inwardly from the ends thereof, rollers carried by said end members at substantiallyV the longitndinal axes of said bed frames and slidable on said guideways, said guideways having transversely disposed grooves formed at the inner ends thereof and adapted to receive said last-mentioned rollers for retaining'` vsaid bed frames in abutting relation, said guidewaysV having transversely disposed grooves formed atV the outer ends thereof and adapted to receive said last-mentioned rollers for retaining said bed frames in spaced relation;
7. A bedstead having inwardly disposed horizontal supporting means on 'its side rails, in combination with track members provided with horizontal end grooves adapted to freely receive said supporting means, and each track-endV having a reinforcing bracket secured thereto formed with an inward part embracing the corresponding track member back of its groove, and said brackets each having a forward part of shoulder-stop character overlying the acent grooved part.

A bedstead having inwardly disposed horizontal supporting means on its side rails, in combination with track members provided with horizontal end grooves Y adapted to freely receive said supporting means, and each track-end having a reinforcing bracket secured thereto formed with an inward part embracing the corresponding track member back of its groove, and said brackets each having a forward part of shoulder-stop character overlying the adjacent grooved part, said brackets each iucluding side Walls set Hush with the sides of their rails and level therewith at the top, except that the outermost part of each bracket is formed to arrest movement on the rail.
9. In a device of the class described, a bedstead, a transversely disposed horizontal track member supported thereon, a pair of relatively shiftable bed frames slidably supported on said track member and adapted to be laterally shifted toward and away from eac-h other, said track member having a pair a longitudinally disposed slots formed therein near its center, bearings on said bed frames adjacent to their inner edges adapted to slidably engage said slots to prevent upward tilting of the inner edges of said frames, means on said track member to retain said bed frames in abutting relation to form a double-sized bed, andv means on said track member to retain said bed frames in spaced relation to form a pair of single-sized beds.
