This invention relates to bed frames'and particularly to a bed frame of the type that can be laterally shifted away from an adjacently positioned bed or other object to facilitate the making of the bed.
The bed construction of the present invention constitutes a modification and improvement of the bed frame type disclosed in the above mentioned co-pending applications.
In general, the bed frame construction of the present invention includes a stationary base frame portion which moveably supports an overlying auxiliary bed supporting frame portion, be laterally shifted away from an adjacent object such as a wall or another bed frame. The base frame portion is trapezoidal in shape, as viewed from the top, and includes a head portion of substantially the same width as the overlying auxiliary frame portion and a narrow foot portion of substantially less width than said auxiliary frame portion to provide a walk space between the bed and an adjacent object when the overlying auxiliary frame is shifted. The two frameportions can be selectively pivotally connectedtogether at either a right hand pivotal such that the auxiliary frame portion can.
. ing pivot pin 41 in a right hand hole 42,
connection to form a right hand bed assembly or at a left pivotal connection to form a left hand bed assembly,
thusmaking it possible to utilize a single standard base frame design and a single standard auxiliary frame design to form eithera left hand or right hand bed unit.
The above mentioned trapezoidal base frame construction also includes a laterally shiftable support member, which includes legs for the foot of the bed, which member can be selectively disposed in either a position of left hand lateral extension or a position of right hand lateral extension, depending on whether the base frame is to be used in connection with a left hand bed unit or a right hand bed unit.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved bed construction of the type described which incorporates standardized frame portions that can be selectively assembled into either right hand or left hand bed units.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the invention is clearly shown.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed frame constructed according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the bed frame construction of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end elevational view construction of the preceding figures;
Figure 4 is a partial view illustrating the details of a laterally shiftable support member comprising a portion of the structure of the preceding figures;
Figure 5 is a side elevational view corresponding to Figure 4; and
of the bed frame Figure 6 is a side elevational view corresponding to Figure 4. a p g Referring in detail to the drawing, Figure 1 illustrates a bed frame construction, in accordance with the present invention, which includes a base frame portion indicated generally at 20 and an auxiliary bed supporting frame portion indicated generally at 22. Base frame portion 20 includes converging side members 23 and 24, transverse head member 25, and transverse foot member 26. Auxiliary frame portion 22 includes side members" 30 and 31, transverse head member 33, and foot plate member 34. Triangular gusset plates 36 and 37 connect head member 33 to side members 30 and 31 and also serve as anti-friction bearing surfaces in contact with ball castors 38 and 39 respectively. The two frame portions 20 and 22 can be selectively connected together by either mountor by mounting pivot pin 41 in a left hand hole 43, said holes being provided at the head corners of base frame portion 20. The upper portion of pivot pin 41 extends upwardly through either a left hand or right hand bearing hole 45 provided in the head corners of auxiliary frame portion 22.
As is best seen in Figures 4, 5 and 6 a support member 47 is mounted on base frame portion 20 so as to be selectively disposable either in a position of left hand extension illustrated or in a position of right hand extension indicated by dotted delineation 47-A. Transversejtoe member 26 is provided with downturned flanges 48, 49, and 50 to form an inverted U-shaped guide for slidably receiving support member 47. A left ball castor 51 and a right ball castor 52 are mounted on the top surface of support member 47. When the support member is in the position of left lateral extension, illustrated in Figure 4, ball castor 52 extends upwardly through a hole 54 in transverse plate member 26 whereby the ball castor is in anti-friction supporting engagement with the under surface of transverse plate member 34 on auxiliary frame portion 22. When support member 47 is in the position of right lateral extension, right ball castor 51 extends upwardly through a hole 55 in transverse member 26 whereby the ball castor is in anti-friction supporting engagement with transverse plate member on auxiliary frame portion 22.
As is best seen in Figures 2 and 3, a pair of spaced legs 57 for the head portion of the bed, are mounted to base frame 20 at 58 'by welding or other suitable means. A second pair of spaced legs 59 are mounted to laterally shiftable support member 47 at 60 by welding or other suitable means. a i
' As is best seen in Figures 1 and 2, when the bed frame portions 20 and 22 are to be assembled to form a left hand unit a left U-shaped anti-tilt bracket 61 is remov ably mounted by bolts 68 to auxiliary frame portion 22, and includes a flange 63 which extends under downturned flange 48 of base frame 20 in the manner illustrated in Figure 2. From a consideration of Figure 1 it will be understood that with the auxiliary frame 22 in central position illustrated, when a weight is placed on overhanging portion 65 auxiliary frame 22 will be prevented from tilting due to engagement of anti-tilt bracket 61 with downturned flange 48. When the bed frame portions 20 and 22 are to be assembled as a right hand b'ed unit anti-tilt bracket 61 is mounted to auxiliary frame portion 22 at a right hand position as is indicated by dotted delineation at 61-A.
With continued reference to Figure 1, when frame portions 20 and 22 are to be assembled as a left hand unit, a second anti-tilt bracket 67 is removably secured by bolts 68 or the like to the right side of auxiliary frame portion 22. Hence when such frame portion is shifted to the left an inwardly extending flange 70 on anti-tilt bracket 67 will extend under the under edge of frame 23 of base frame portion 20. Hence when weight is placed on an overhanging portion 72 of auxiliary frame 20 such auxiliary frame will be prevented from tilting. It will be understood that when frame portions 20 and 22 are assembled as a right hand unit anti-tilt bracket 67 is secured to left hand frame member 31 at the position indicated by dotted delineation at 6'7A.
In operation, two bed frame portions 20 and two auxiliary bed supporting frame portions 22 can be assembled as a right hand unit and a left hand unit and then adjacently positioned to provide a twin bed arrangement. In assembling the left hand unit pivot pin 45 is mounted in left hand base frame hole 43 whereby auxiliary frame portion 22 can be swung to the left away from the adjacently positioned right hand unit. Support member 47 of the left base frame unit is disposed in the position of left lateral extension. Hence when the auxiliary bed supporting frame is swung to the left a walk ing access space 74, Figure 1, is provided.
In assembling the adjacently positioned right hand unit pivot pin 41 is mounted in right hole 42 in base frame portion 20 and support member 47 is disposed in a position of right lateral extension. With the right hand unit assembled in this manner it will be understood that auxiliary bed supporting frame 22 can be pivoted to the right away from the adjacently positioned left hand unit to expose a space at 75, Figure 1, for walking access of a person making the bed.
As is best seen in Figure 1, transverse plate member 34 of auxiliary frame 22 includes elongated slots 76 and 77 that form sockets for ball castors 51 and 52 respectively. It will be noted from a consideration of Figure 1 that when support member 47 is in the position of left lateral extension left elongated slot 76 registers with ball castor 51 when auxiliary frame 22 is in a normal centered position. Similarly, when support member 47 is in the position of right lateral extension elongated slot 77 registers with ball castor 52 whereby auxiliary frame portion 22 is maintained in its normal centered position.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow:
