This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovements in beds and refers more particularly to devices of this character especially adapted where it is desirable to conf5 serve space.

yIt is a general object of this invention to provide a bed of the character described having means whereby one bed ymay be con- 4 cealed beneath another to thus occupy the TU space of one when not inuse, but Which may be readily extended to provide separate beds of approXimately'full size.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a guard for protecting the l@ mattressV andcovers of the bed which is slidable under or Withinthe other to prevent the soiling' or tearing of the mattress and bed clothes. Y y

Viththe above and other objects in view 2Q whichl will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and. more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood'that such changes in the precise ,embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come Within the scope of the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a bed device which may be readily utilized in apartments or houses now built or 1n apartments or houses at the time of their construction. In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a partition or wall within an apartment or house and defining the rooms 6 and 7, 6 in the present instance, being the bed room and 7 the living room Where, in case of an emergency, it is desirable to provide an extra bed. Of course, it will be appreciated that 7 may be any room of the apartment or house other than the living room.

The partition 5 is provided with an opening 8 therein of a height and width suilicient to permit the concealable bed 9 to be moved therethrough to a position exposed Within the room 7 or to a position concealed by a bed 10 located in the room 6 with its head 11 adjacent the opening 8. The beds 9 and 10 are slidably connected in the manner now about to be described to permit the concealment of the bed 9 beneath the bed 10. While in the accompanying drawings the beds have been illustrated in different rooms when eX- posed for use, it will be appreciated that that type of beds illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 may be used as a unit in one room.

The 8 side rails 16 form supports for end brackets f enlarged inwardly, as at 26, to form hangers for mounting guide rails 27 which slidably support the inner ends of the frame, to be vlater described, of the bed 9. The guide rails 27 are of inverted U-shape in cross sect-ion with their free ends directed inwardly to form supporting tracks 28 on which'ride rollers 29 carried by the vertical portions of T- beams 30 which pass into the guide rails in the manner illustrated in Figure 2.

The T-beams form the side rails of the bed 9 and are connected at their inner ends to an end frame 3l, similar to member 22, which is mounted on bracket members 32 flxedto the inner end portions of the T-rails. The outer ends of the T-rails are secured to bracket members 33, similar to bracket members 32, and the bracket members 33 are connected by an end rail 34, similar to the end rail 31, the end railv 34 and `brackets 33 being preferably connected with a foot member 35 by bolts 36 passed through the end rail and lugs 37 `cn the outer end of the T-rails. The spring` 38 of the bed 9 is stretched across the end rails 3l and 34 and the mattress 39 of the bedk is supported tress over the edge of the spring and its be-v coming yentangled with the side rails.

The foot member 35 is also provided vwith casters 43 and when, it is desired to use the bed 9, it is moved from under the bed 10 by grasping handle 44 formed on the foot member 35.- Movement of the bed 9 to exposed po-y sition is limited by a stop 45 formed on the inner ends of the guide rails 27 which yare y preferably extendedbeyond the head member 14 into the opening 8 a slight distance to thus i permit the full exposure of the bed 9 without necessitating its construction of increased length, as will be readily apparent.

The space between the springs of thefrespective beds is sufficient to permit bed 9 to be made and moved to concealed position andv by reason of the beds being 'supported by the members 12, 14 and 35 which are sup-k ported on casters, it is notnecessary'that they be used in the manner illustrated in Figure l, but they may bemounted in one room and, when desired, moved to operative position within the same room, as will be readily ap parent. c
