METAL BED 0R CRIB.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 23, 1915.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KINGSLEY M. WHITCOMB, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND CRISSEY B.
BRIGGS, OF SHELTON, CONNECTICUT.
METAL BED OR CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed January 28, 1915. Serial No. 8,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, KINcsLEY M. WHIT- COMB and CRIssEY B. BRIGGS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Shelton, Fairfield county, Connecticut, respectively, have invented certain Improvements in Metal Beds or Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to crib beds having vertically movable side bar sections; and the object of our invention is to provide improved guiding means for the movable side bar sections employed with said cribs. The present practice is to provide guide rods at the head and foot of the crib or bed, and to provide the rails of 'said side bar sections with eyes adapted to said rods so as to slide thereon; the upper ends of the guide rods being provided with hooks adapted to engage and support the upper rail of the side bar sections so that the latter may be held in proper position when raised.
Our invention consists in providing the posts at the head and foot of the crib or bed with channel members, and the ends of the rails of the side bar sections with projecting heads adapted to fit said channel members whereby the said side bar sections may be properly guided when raised and lowered; the said guiding means being held against displacement or distortion by the corner posts of the structure.
These and other features of our invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a crib or bed having the improved construction forming the subject of our invention;
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of one of the posts of said crib or bed showing the guiding channel and the hook supporting the upper rail of the side bar sect ion thereof;
Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, and p Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are similar sectional views illustrating modified constructions within the scope of our invention. I I
Tn the drawings, 1, 1, represent the head and foot posts of a crib or bed of ordinary construction, which in the present instance is provided with side bar sections adapted to slide vertically with respect to the rest of the structure. These side bar sections are made up of top and bottom rails 2 and 3, v
with a sub-rail 4 and vertical'rods 5 and 6; the rods 5 extending between the top and bottom rails, while the rods 6 extend between the bottom rail and the sub-rail.
The posts 1 are provided with channel members 7 and 7; the channel members 7 being disposed above the mattress frame or support 8, while the channel members 7 are disposed below the same, and the rails 2 and 3 have heads 2 and 3 at their respective ends adapted to the channel members 7 and 7 the latter having undercut walls so that said heads may be guided therein when the sides are raised and lowered.
In order that the side bar sections may be.
supported when in the raised position, we provide books 10 pivotally mounted on studs 11 carried by the head and foot posts 1, 1, and these hooks are provided with guard bills or arms 12 adapted to engage the rods when the side bar sections are raised, .which bills or arms are curved so as to automatically throw the hook under the rails 2 to support the latter when said bills or arms are engaged at the end of the lifting action.
The character of the channel members is more clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6, in which Fig. 3 shows the application of an ordinary channel section with undercut walls secured to one of the corner posts by countersunk screws 15. In Fig. 4, we have shown the channel member shaped to conform to the contour of the posts, which is desirable in order that no crevice or crack liable to collect dirt may be left, while in Fig. 5, we have shown a construction in which a channel guide with undercut walls is formed integral with a post.
We claim:
An improved crib or bed having a mattress frame and head and foot frames includ-' ing posts at the corners thereof secured to said mattress frame; vertical channel guides independently carried by said posts above and below the mattress frame; side bar sec-- tions including top and bottom rails movable .with respect to said posts; heads car-' ried by the ends of said top and bottom rails and'slidablyin the channel guides. above and below the mattress frame; hooks carried by the posts and above the upper guides for supporting side bar sections when in a raised position, and curved bills carried by said hooks for engagement by the top rails of the side bar sections when the latter names to this specification, in the presence are lifted to automatically th1('iowhth1eI hooks of two subscribing witnesses. v into supporting position, sai 00 s and V,
bills being pivoted on a common axis and v Bgg g 5 reversed one relatively to the other and said bills serving as guards for the throats of Witnesses:
the hooks. RAYMOND T. OLSEN,
In testimony whereof We have signed our CHAS. C. SWAN.
