EASEL DISPLAY-CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent. Paglnd NQV, 25, 1919,
Application filed June 14, 1919. Serial No. 304,166.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, CHESTER A. SArnoL'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easel Display-Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to cartons having an easel attachment, so that the carton may be displayed in an inclined position, and has particular reference to improvements in the easel display carton shown and described in Patent No. 1,296,223, granted to me under date of March 4, 191%).
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned charactenwhich is simple iin-construction, strong, and easy to adjust.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the several parts of the carton that they will all be arranged within the same.' when folded.
Oner objects and advantages of the invention-will be apparent during the course of the following description.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specication and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same;
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a carton embodying my i vention;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the carton is formed or folded;
Fig.. l is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the carton with the sign card or flap folded within the carton; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the carton with the sign card or flap partly folded therein; and, i Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the device in use.
In the drawings wherein, for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a blank as a whole which is preferably formed of card board. This blank is provided with longitudinal scores 11, spaced to provide an outer bottom 12, and outer sides 13. gitudinally at 14e, forming inner or false sides 15. i
At corresponding ends the sides 13 are provided with ends-16, which are adapted to overlap, when assembled. At the opposite ends, the sides 13 carry ends 17 and 18, overlapping when assembled. The end 17 carries a tongue 19, adapted for insertion within -a slit. 20, formed at the end on the opposite side 13, as shown.
he blank 10 further comprises a longitudinal extension 21, which is foldable upon the transverse score 22, at the end of the bottom 12. The extension 21 isl foldable upon a transverse score 23, providing an outer false end 24. The numeral 25 designates an inner false end foldable upon the score 23.. An inner false bottom 26 is foldable upon a transverse score 27, and this false bottom is provided with a transverse score 28.
The numeral 29 designates an easel section, foldable upon the score 28, and having a transverse score 30, for providing the opposite easel section 31.r This easel section 31 is foldable upon a transverse score 32, forming a locking section 33, having a. transverse score 34, forming a dislay or sign tab 35..- The locking section 33 as a tongue 36 stamped therefrom and this tongue is adapted to engage beneath the outer end 17, as will be apparent. The lower bottom 12 is provided near and spacedI from one end with a transverse slot 37, for receiving the longitudinal strip 21.
In folding the blank to produce the carton, the sides 13 are rst folded upon the scores 11. The inner or false sides 15 may next be folded upon the scores lllto assume the inner position. rl`he ends 16 are then folded inwardly at a right angle to the sides i3 and the ends 17 and '18 are` folded in- 'lhe blank 10 is scored lon-- wardly to overlap with the tongue 19 being inserted Within the slot 20. The longitudinal strip 21 is neat folded so that the outer false end 24 is arranged in Contact with the outerl end 16, and the inner false end 25 in contact with the inner end 16. The upper' false bottom 26 now contacts with the lower bottom 12, while the strip ispassed through the slot 37, the transverseseore 28 being arranged at or .near this slot. The end of the strip 21 is now passed between the outer end 17 and the inner end 18, and if the device is to be used in the inclined position, the tongue 36 will be moved outwardly to engage beneath the end 17, the easel sections 29 and 31 then being angularly arranged, as shown. The tab 35 will new project above the body portion of the carton and this tab has suitable data printed thereon. In Fig. 6, theeasel sections are shown as collapsed, and section 29 lying fiat against the bottom 12 While the section 31 is disposed between the ends17 and 18, the locking section 33 being arranged inwardly of and contacting with the inner side of the end 18, the tabv 35 being folded upon the score 34, and lying fiat in contact with thebottom 12.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example ofthe same, and that various changes 1n the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A carton formed from a single blank, said blank comprising a body portion having longitudinal scores to provide sides and a bottom, said bottom having a transverse opening formed therein, said body portion being provided with transverse scores for forming ends, said blank comprising a longi tudinal strip carried by one end of the bottom, said longitudinal 'strip being foldable upon one end of the bottom and adapted for insertion through the transverse opening, said longitudinal strip being provided with a plurality of transverse scores forming easel sections and an extension carried by one easel section, said extension being adapted to be passed in contact with one end of the carton and having means to engage with such end.
2. A carton formed from a single blank, said blank comprising a. body portion having longitudinal scores to provide sides and a bottom, said-'bottom having a transverse opening formed therein which is arranged near and spaced from one end thereof, said sides carrying ends which aretransversely scored, said ends being adapted to be assembled in contacting relation so that there is a pair of ends at each end of the carton, said blank comprising a longitudinal strip carried by one end of the bottom, said 1ongitudinal strip being Vfoldable upon one end of the carton and adapted for insertion within the carton, said longitudinal strip being passed through the transverse opening of the bottom, said longitudinal strip being provided with a plurality of transverse scores forming easel sections which are adapted to be angularly arranged in use and an extension carried by one easel section, said extension being adapted to be passed between the ends at one end of the carton and having a tongue stamped therefrom to engage beneath one of said ends.
sides carrying end members which are transversely scored, sald end member being adapted to be assembled in contacting relation so that there is a pair of end members at each end of the carton, said blank comprising a longitudinal strip carried by one end of the bottom, said longitudinal strip being foldable upon one end of the carton and adapted for insertion within the carton, said longitudinal strip being passed through the transverse opening ofthe bottom, said longitudinal strip beingprovided with a plurality of transverse scores forming easel sections and an extension carried by one easel section, said extension being adapted to be passed between the end members, said extension being transversely scored so that it is adapted to be folded about the inner end member and to lie substantially flat within the carton, said extension carrying a tongue stamped therefrom to engage beneath the outer end member.
4t. A carton comprising a boX-like body portion having a bottom provided with a transverse opening disposed near and spaced from one vend thereof, such end embodying a pair of end members, 'and a longitudinal arranged within and contacting witlr strip) the ottom of the body portion and passed l through the transverse opening, said 1ongiranged near and spacedfrom one end of the body portion, a longitudinal strip arranged within the carton and contacting with the bottom and passed through the transverse opening, such strip being transversely scored to provide easel sections and an extension carried by one easel section, vsuch extensionl being-'adapted to Contact with the said end of the body portion and carrying a In 'testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
