REFLECTO R-LAMP RIM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application filed April 30, 1919. Serial No. 293,752.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHO M. OTTE, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reflector-Lamp Rims, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to reflector lamps as, for example, headlight or spot light lamps for automobiles; and the improvement consists in providing a strong binding waterproof metal rim for assembling and holding the parts of the reflector lamp, having a strong detachable means of attaching the ends thereof which is arranged to draw lengthwise of said rim; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a reflector spot light, the front portion being shown in diametral section and having the improved holding rim; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of said holding rim showing the relation of the same to the assembled parts around the edge of the lamp. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the joint between the ends of said metal rim showing a simple and strong binding attachment for the ends of said rim. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the adjacent ends of the metal rim showing the closed slots a spaced distance from each end into which the attaching clips are inserted. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a modification of the attachment shown for the metal rim in which the ends of the attaching clips are spot welded to the outer side of said metal rim. Fig. 6 is a sectional view at line 66 in Fig. 3 showing the manner of attaching the holdingclilps in the slotted metal rim. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the modification shown in Fig. 5, showing the ends of the holding clips spot welded to the outer side of the metal rim. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the pair of clips shown in Fig. 3 removed from the metal rim with the screw bolt in position therein; and F ig. 9 is a similar view of the modified clips shown in Fig. 5 in which one of the clips is threaded to receive the end of the screw in threaded attachment within said clip.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the metal reflector, of the lamp which has the glass front 11 attached thereto by means of the metal mm 12.
The metal rim 12 is shaped to extend down over thefront of the outer edge of the glass 11, having a head 13 to receive a water and dust proof packing 14. therein. The edge of the metal reflector 10 is given a spaced return bend 15 within which the rear water and dust proof packing 16 is placed and against which the rear edge 17 of the metal rim 12 bears in binding engagement, thereby giving a close water proof packing for the front and rear sides of the joint between the metal reflector l0 and the glass 11 and resiliently holding said glass.
The divided metal rim 12 extends around the peripheries of the reflector 10 and glass 11, and has the joint 18 between the ends thereof, which joint must be detachably united with strong binding force so as to draw the rim 12 firmly on to the return bend edge 15 of the metal reflector 10 as well as onto the glass 11, binding the glass against the edge of said metal reflector. Accordingly a connection is provided for said ends arranged to resist a line of force parallel to the axis of the connecting means by providing a pair of closed slots 19 a spaced distance from each of the ends of the divided rim, and a pair of double clips 20 having the spreading and binding ends 21. Said clips 20 are shaped in tubular form in their central portion to receive therethrough the screw bolt 22 and have the shoulders 23 on the curve of the rim 12 which brace firmly against the ends of the rim 12 at each side and preferably extending up to the joint 18 so asto form a closed joint therewith. It is obvious that the binding ends 21 may be inserted through the slots 19 for each clip 20 and will be held firmly in position with strong binding force by the return bend edge 15 of the metal reflector 10, thereby providing an exceedingly simple and strong connection for the ends of the rim 12 which may be constructed at small cost.
The modified clips 24, shown in Figs. 5, 7 and 9, have the tubular barrel 25 with the binding screw 26 and the ends 27, which are spot welded to the outer periphery of the metal rim 12 adjacent each end thereof. One of the clips 24: is threaded within its tubular portion to receive the threaded end of the screw 26 thereby doing away with the nut for said screw.
The preferred form shown in Figs. 3, 6
and 8 is made and assembled at less cost and holds with substantiallyequal strength. It leaves the outer periphery of the metal rim 12 smooth and does not necessitate special care in finishing as do the CliPSQA:
with their ends 27 iontthe outer surface of glass and refiector,'therim1,2will be sprung the metal rim 12. Each of these attaching clips performs the oflice'asrequired having great strength to resist the line of binding force parallel to the axis-of the barrel of the reflector, thereby making it easy to attach or detach said metallic binding rim and to assemble thefront and rearipackings V 14 and16 withinthe rim 12 anddrawinto holding engagement with themetal reflector "and glass front 11.
As hereinbefore stated'the shoulders 23 are shapedtothe curve'of theperiphery of thebinding'rim 12 so as to hold the barrels of the tubul'ar p'arts of the clips'20 in'per- 'fectalinementto re'ceive'the screw-bolt 22 flector 10 and the glass "11 so that when drawn down onto the peripheries of said outwardly thereby resiliently holding the water andidu'st pro'of'packings 1i and 16,
thereby "making a tight joint pressing said packings into close adhesion between the j oints' of the parts.
' I 'claim' as new:
'1. In lamp'the'combination of a metal reflector halving a retu1'-n bend outer edge,
a glass'frontfor said'reflector, a split metal rim shaped to flt said glass and turned edge of said reflector in" binding engagement, the
ends of saidbinding rim'having closed slots therethroughi lengthwise of said binding rim a spaced distance each side of the joint-between said :ends, "folded binding clips each shaped to form a tube in their central portion, the ends of said clips extending through said slots and spread in opposite directions into binding attachment with said metal binding rim, the tubular portions of the adjacent clips placed end to end, and a binding screw bolt inserted through said tubular portions to draw and hold the ends of said binding rim in holding engagement around said lamp.
2. In a lamp, a reflector having a peripheral projection, a glass front, a split rim engaged with the projection and glass front, said rim having slots adjacent the ends thereof provided by the split, clips formed of strips'bent centrally of the ends to provide tubular parts which latter abut the rim, theends of the strips belng contracted to iornrsho'uldersand said ends bemg passed through the slots andbent in opposite directions into engagement. with the rim to draw the shoulders and the tubular parts tightly against'the rim, anda bolt'engaged in the-tubular parts to draw the clips and thereby'the rim ends together.
3. In combination with a reflector havinga glass front in position thereon, a split rim engaged over the reflector and formed to hold the glass front in position, said rim having slots adjacent the ends provided by the split, clips formed of strips bent at their centers to providetnbular parts and having the ends of'the strips passed tl'nrongh the slots and bent in opposite directions into engagement with the rim and seating on and against the reflector and a bolt'passed through the tub'ular'parts to draw the clips together and thereby to force each of the ends of the clips tightly into engagement 'Wltll and agamst the reflector.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two'witnesses.
