Specification of Letters Patent.

Original application filed January 15, 1917, Serial No. 142,402. Divided and this application filed September 10, 1917. Serial No. 190,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS I. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oak Park, in the county of Cook and the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Lamp Mountings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This application is a division of my application No. 142,402, filed January 15, 1917 and now pending.
The purpose of this invention is to provide improved supports or mountings for It consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described, as indicated in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a lamp equipped with mounting devices'embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section at the line, 33, on Fig. 1, through the mountings only, that is, not cutting through the lamp which is shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a detail section at the line, 4-4, on Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the interchangeable bracket jaws.
In the drawings A represents a vehicle headlight lamp, the detail construction of which is the subject matter of my said application No. 142,402, and which is not illustrated or described in detail in this application'. 2 is a bail which embraces the upper portion of the casing of the lamp, A, and the free ends of which are apertured to-receive pivot pins or studs, 2, by which the bail is pivoted to the lamp casing, the lamp thus hanging pendant in the bail. The casing, A is provided opposite said free ends of the bail with hollow lugs, 4, which may be stamped outwardly upon the metal of the casing member. The inner ends of said studs are annularly grooved at 2 to receive the slotted locking washers, 5, and between said washers and the inner faces of the end walls of the hollow lugs, 4, are interposed resilient plates 6. Said plates are preferably of triangular shape with-the corners turned out to constitute bearing points, and
are also preferably centrally depressed to receive the locking washers, 5. Interposed between the outer end faces of the said hollow lug, 4, and the apertured ends of the bail, 2", are friction washers, 7.
The said resilient plates, 6, cooperate with said friction washers, 7, to produce yielding friction joints between the ends of the bail and the lamp casing, of such nature that the lamp will be frictionally held in any position of adjustment on its pivot stud, and against. accidental displacement by reason of vibration; but such adjustment may be varied by the application of moderate 'force applied to the lamp. The said hollow pivot lugs, 4, are sufliciently deep to receive the pin, 2, and the plates, 6, so that the inner cylmdrical surface of the ring-like casing member, A is free from projections,
the presence of which would prevent the lens and its glazing ring passing freely into saidcasing member.
The lamp may be attached to a fixed support, 10, as one of the side stanchions of a wind shield when used on an automobile, by universal pivot means made as follows:

Thepivotal connection between said bracket and hail comprises, as shown herein, a stud, 13, which extends through the bracket and into a hollow lu 14, formed in the central portion of the bai The inner end of the pivot stud within the hollow lug, is slotted to receive a washer 15, and between said washer and the inner face of said hollow lug, there is interposed a spring plate, 16. Interposed between the bracket and stud head is a friction washer, 17. The construction described provides a yielding friction joint between the bracket and ball which permits adjustment of the stud, 13, by the exertion of a moderate amount of power against the lamp, while holding the lamp against accidental dis.- placement under the ordinary vibrations of a motor car.
The bracket, 11, is so constructed as to fit a wide range of sizes and shapes of fixed fitted thereto, so that jaws of different sizes ,may be interchangeably applied .to said Said jaws may each consist of a arms. single piece of sheet metal which is folded centrally to constitute two like leaves, and said sheet is cut away at its folded edge to produce spaced lugs, 21, which enter openings formed in deep vertical flanges, 23, at the sides of the'brackets. Said flanges, 23, are curved at their outer edges to conform to the curvature of the bail.. A clamping bolt, 24, which extends through registering apertures in said flanges, 23, and is provided with a screw threaded nut, 25, constitutes means to clamp the jaws on a fixed support.
The rovision of the separately formed detacha le jaws, 20, makes it practicable to furnish a plurality of difl'erent sized jaws at an inconsequential expense with each bracket, so as to thereby enable the jaws ofthe bracket tobe accurately fitted to supportsof widely different sizes and shapes.
The jaws may be made of relatively light metal, whereby they may be specially formed to a limited extent when the bracket is fitted in placeon the support, and thus insure a neat and reliable fit of the jaws to the support. No fastening means are required to fit the jaws to the bracket arms, inasmuch as the clamping pressure of the bolt, 24, serves, when the parts are installed, to fixedly hold the jaws 1n place.
The advantage of pivoting the clamping arms, 18, of the bracket to the pivot stud, 13, by which the bracket is connected to the bail,
is, that thereby the free ends of said arms and the jaws carried thereby have a very wide range of adjustment toward and from each other to adapt the bracket to fixed supports of widely difl'erent dimensions.
It is to be understood that the invention may assume other specific embodiments within the broader phases thereof, as set out in the appended claims, and that the invention is not limited to the embodiment shown except as to the claims wherein the same is specifically pointed out.
I claim 1. A universally adjustable lamp comprising a casing, a bail pivoted at its lower ends to said casing, a horizontal bracket comprising two sheetmetal arms having overlapping outer ends and vertically eeaaao horizontally disposed overlapping outer "ends and vertically flanged inner ends with the lower edges of said flanges curved to correspond to the curvature of the bail, and
a pivot bolt extending through the overlapping arms of said bracket and the central portion of said bail.
3. Ina lamp mounting, a bracket comprising two arms pivoted for swinging aboutthe pivot to separate and close attheir free ends, in combination with interchangeable jaws detachably fitted to said free ends.
4. In a lamp mounting, a bracket comprising pivoted arms and clamping jaws, each jaw consisting of a sheet metal member folded upon itself to form two leaves, with means to detachably fit the jaws to said arms.
5. In a lamp mounting, a bracket comprising pivoted members provided at their free ends with apertured flanges, jaws provided with lugs to removably enter theapertures of the flanges and a clamping bolt extending through said flanges.
6. In a lamp mounting, abracket comprising pivoted members provided at their free ends with spaced openings, and jaws, each comprising a sheet metal member folded between its ends to form two leaves, said sheet being notched at its folded edge to provide spaced lugs to enter said openings.
7. A lamp comprising a sheet metal. casing having oppositely disposed integral hollow pivot lugs, a bail, pivots connecting the lower ends of said bail to said lugs, and resilient members applied to said pivots to afford resilient friction joints between said bail and easing, said resilient members being'contained within said hollow lugs.
8. A lamp comprising a casing, a bail pivoted at its lower ends to the opposite sides of said casing and provided at its central portion with a hollow boss, a bracket frictionally engaging said boss, a pivot to connect the bracket to the boss, and a resilient member applied to said latter pivot within said boss to force together the friction surfaces between the bracket and bail.
9. The combination with a member formed with a hollow pivot lug having a partially closed end, of a pivoted member, a pivot stud extending through the latter member and said end of said lug, a spring plate applied 125 over the inner end of said stud and hearing against said end of the lug and means to hold partly closed end, of a pivoted member, a pivot stud extending through the latter member and said end of said lug, a spring plate applied over the inner end of said stud and bearing against said end of the lug, the inner end of the stud being grooved and a plate retaining washer fitting the grooved end of said stud.
11. The combination with a member formed with a hollow pivot lug having a partly closed end, of a pivoted member, a pivot stud extending through the latter member and said end of said lug, a spring plate applied over the inner end of said stud and bearing against said 'end of the lug, the inner end of the stud being grooved and a plate retain Washer fitting the grooved end of said stud, said spring plate being centrally depressed to receive said washer.
12. The combination with a member formed with a hollow pivot lug having a partly closed end, of a pivoted member, a pivot stud extending through the latter member and said end of said lug, a spring plate applied over the inner end of said stud and bearing against said end of the lug, and a friction Washer between the outer face of iaid end of said lug and said pivoted mem- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, Illinois, this 6th day of September, 1917.
