Specification of Letters Patenti Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Original application filed May 23, 1918, Serial No. 236,212. Divided and this application filed February 26,
To all whom 'it may concern:
lie it known that l, JAMES Q. Lnxvrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of llleber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to a catch, and particularly to catch which is susceptible of being used as a part of a sealing machine for knock-down boxes, etc.
The structure disclosed in this application is divided out of my allowed United iltates application, Eierial Number Qll tiled May 23, i918, relating to a sealing` machine for knock-down boxes, etc.
The object of the invention is the con-4 struction of a simple and ellicient catch which will enable a fixed and a movable or hinged part to be fastened together against accidental displacement, but the catch can be equally operated for releasing the movable or hinged part so that it can be moved away from the fixed part.
W ith this` and other objects in View, my invention coinprises certain novel combinations and constructimis of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawing:
Figure 11 is a View in side elefation of my improved catch, while Fig. 2 is a front View of the same.
Wig. 3 is a view of the catch in an open position upon the hinged or movable niember.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, l. comprises a hinge having its inner leaf secured to the top of the pressine plate E of a machine for sealing knock-down boxes. lt is to be understood, however, that 3 may designate a gate or door, as my catch is susceptible of being used for holding a gate or door, or the like, in a closed position. llhe outer leaf Ll, of the hinge l, projects slightly beyond the outer end of the hinged member or pressure plate 3, and in the pressure plate 3, at 5, is formed a notched or bifurcated portion which registers with a similarly constructed notch 6 formed in the stationary plate or fixed member or frame 7.
Slidably mounted in an aperture formed Serial N0. 279,291.
in the outer leaf il, is bolt S; the aperture in leaf et, through which bolt S works, registers with the bifurcated or notched portion 5 of the movable or pressure plate 3, and with the notched or bifurcated portion 6 of the lixed or stationary member 7 The bolt 8 is preferably square in cross-section, so that it will not rotate in the leaf fl, notch 5 and bifurceted or notched portion 6.
A disk 9 is mounted upon the bolt 8 and is secured upon the bolt by pin l0 nearthe outer end of said bolt, and between the leaf el and disk 9 is positioned coil spring 1l for normally exerting an upward or outward strain or pull upon bolt 8 so that when its apertured, enlarged head l2 is hooked under the right-angled end 7n ot the iixed member 7, the catch device will not accidentally be detached from the fixed member or frame 7; however, by reason of the out wardly-inclined head l2, the operator can easily grasp the head and move it to an unhooked position (Fig. for permitting the pressure plate or hinged member 3 to be swung to its open position, in. the present instance allowing the box or carton t0 be removed or placed upon the former plate 13. On the outer face of the bolt 8 is lixedly secured a stop pin lll, which pin prevents the bolt 8 from moving too far up on the leaf 4 by spring 1l; the bolt 8, when in its locking position shown in Figs. l and 2, is positively secured against any rotary movement by the free positioning of the bolt in the registering sockets or notches in. the end of the pressure plate or movable member 3 and the notched or apertured end 7^" of the frame or fixed inen'iber 7.
It 'will be understood that the frame 7 may represent a frame for a gate or a door frame, and that 3 may represent the hinged or movable member such as a door, a gate or the like, and the operation will be the same provided the notches or bifurcated portions are formed upon the frame and the hinged member, to complete the specific combination forl etliciently performing the desired function of locking the hinged memw ber or door in a closed position, but per1nitting the releasing of the hinged member by quickly swinging the bolt 8 upwardly as a result of placing the finger between the outwardly-bent head and the frame 7.
What I claim is:
l. A catch device comprising a hinge including an outer leaf, a bolt slidably mounted in said leaf, said bolt provided with a lower, angularly-disposed, enlarged head, a pin on said bolt between the enlarged head and the leaf, a disk upon said bolt near its upper or outer end, means on the bolt for securing the disk thereon, and
l `a coil spring on the bolt between the leaf and the disk.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame provided with a notched portion, a movable member provided with a notched end registering` with the notch on the frame, a leaf movably mounted upon the movable member and provided with an aperture registering with the notches aforesaid, a bolt slidably mounted in the aperture of the leaf, said bolt provided at its innerend with an outwardlyextending head adapted to fit over the notched portion of the frame, and the bolt normally positioned in the notched portion of the hinged member, a pin on the bolt between the leaf and the head, a disk or plate on the bolt near its outer end, yielding' means between the disk and the leaf, and means fastening` the disk upon the bolt.
3. A catch device comprising a leaf or plate, a slidable bolt mounted upon said leaf, means on one side of said leaf and eX- erting a pull on the bolt in one direction, means on the other side of the leaf and se cured to the bolt for limitingtoo great a movement of the bolt in one direction, and a head formed upon the inner end of the bolt and adapted to be readily grasped by thel operator.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
JAMES QUINCY LEAVITT.
