ASH-RECEP'IACLE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM ELKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ash sifters and has for its primary object theprovision of a receptacle having a dust collectingsection and movable reticulated means overlying said section and adapted to support an ash tray or container in sifting position with respect thereto so that when said means is actuated, the ashes contained in said tray or container will be agitated and the dust discharged to the collecting section of the structure during the sifting operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an ash sifter in which that type of tray or pan'customarily used in the ash pit of a stove may be readily associated with the movable agitating means of the device.
Another object of the invention resides in the general construction of a sifter in which the sifting operation may be carried on Without undue labor on part of the operator and without the scattering 'or distribution of dust on the outside of the sifter during the sifting operation.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the sifter showing the swinging closure adjusted to an opened position.

The invention comprises a suitable receptacle 10 which in the present instance, is of rectangular form and constructed of metal. However, in this respect, I do not wish to be limited as there may be many obvious shapes that would be just as beneficial, likewise, I do not wish to confine myself to the use of metal but find same highly preferable in view of its being highly durable and fire proof.
The receptacle is provided at one side near its top with an opening 11 adapted to be sealed during the sifting operation by a swinging closure 12, the latter having a projection portion 13 conforming with the shape of the opening 11 and adapted to snugly fit therein whereby to seal the joint perfectly between the opening and the closure and prevent the escape of dust to the outside during the sifting operation. The swinging closure may be held operatively extended over the opening by) means of suitable keepers 14 mounted upon the frontlwall of the receptacle above the opening 1 At one end, the receptacle is provided with an opening 15, to accommodate a removable slidably mounted dust collecting drawer 16, the same being arranged to freely rest upon the bottom wall of the receptacle as shown in Fig. 2. The opening 15 is normally sealed by a sliding cover plate 17 having side flanges 18 operatively associated with continuous vertical flanges 19 of the receptacle whereby the closure plate may be moved in a vertical direction. The flanges 19 exceed the length of the closure plate so that when the latter is adjusted to permit of insertion of the drawer in the receptacle or removal of the same therefrom, the closure plate will be maintained in a relatively fixed adjusted position through frictional contact of the flanges 18 with said flanges 19.
At a point above the drawer 16 and disposed in horizontal alinement with the opening 11 is a movable member or agitator frame 20 which includes end sections 21 having bars 22-22 suitably secured to the longitudinal bars 2323 of a rectangular section 24:. The vertical bars 25 of said end sections 21 and the vertical bars 26 of said section 24 are connected together by braces 27 and as illustrated said braces are provided with trunnions 28 and 29 respectively which find bearings in the end walls of the recepat one side as at 33. It is of a design which will permit of its being normally arranged in the ash pit of a stove so that when sufficient ashes have been collected, the tray 7 may be placed in the agitator frame ready for the sifting operation. One side of the agitator frame is closed by a reticulated wall 34; which extends over the open side 38 of the tray 32 when the latter is correctly positioned in the agitator for the sifting operation. The open side 35 V of the agitator frame may be held in fixed alinement with the opening 11 in the-receptacle 10 by engagement of the handle with-the mentioned stop 31; This facilitates the application of the tray to the agitator frame or removal of the same therefrom.
The braces 2727 are respectively provided withextensions 36 and 37, the former having-an opening 38 therein and the latter,
a recess 39. After the tray has been inserted in the agitator frame for the sifting operation, a securing or looking bar 40 is "applied across the open side ofsaid agitator frame and against one side of the tray 32 and as shown in'Figs. land 2,0ne end of said bar is freely receivable -in the opening 38 and the other end likewise receivable in the recess 39. The recess 39 has an offset 4 1 in one of its vertical edges whereby the bar 40 may be sprung to engage in said ofiset. The springing of the bar is effected by providing the bar with a circular enlargement 42 adapted to engage with oneside of tray32 as clearly shown :in Figs. 1 and '2.
After the tray 32 has been securely adjusted to the agitator frame, the closure 12 is adjusted over the opening 11 and by moving means, a frame capable of movement about 1 its axis in the supporting means, said frame being of rectangular form in cross-section and open at one side to receive an ash-tray and having a forward rectangular section, and end sections connected at their ends to and extending rearwardly from said forward section and also having end braces equipped with trunnions and forming stops at the back of the'frame, and a foraminous Wall at right angles to said open side and stops; and means for fastening a tray in said frame.
