QUINN, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Shovel and Screen, of which the fol lowing description, taken in connection with the appended claims and accompanying drawings, forms a specification.

The present invention more particularly relates to shovels for the handling of coal and ashes, although other uses for the same may be resorted to. I 7

It very often occurs that in the'burning of coal more or less of the unconsumcd prod not is wasted in the ashes, and although some people would redeem such fuel, they usually fail to do so owing to the difficulty in separating the same from the burned-over product and the limited time generally given in attending the handling of furnace fires. The present invention has among other objects to provide shovel and screen in such form that they may be used co-jointly in removing the refuse from a furnace, the cinders, coal, etc, separated from the ashes and the screen removed and its contents dumped separately from the ashes in the shovel, that its contents may be assorted, as expedient.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the parts that the shovel ano screen may be used independently, whereby the parts will be simple and substantial in con struction, convenient, effective for the purpose and economical to manufacture. These and other commendable features will be apparent in the subjoined description, taken in connection with the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combination shovel and screen.

Like marks of reference refer to corresponding parts in the different views in which A represents the shovel and B, the screen.

The shovel has an elongated rectangular .bottom. It is formed from suitable sheet metal open at its forward end and closed at its rear extremity by an upright continuation of the bottom portion.

The sides 1 are formed from integral extensionsof said bottom, and at their rear ends abut the rear end 2 of said shovel, and are held from lateral displacement by angular extensions of said end, in which position the parts are spot-welded, riveted or otherwise secured. Preferably the sides 1 taper downward to positions near the forvard open end of the shovel, as shown. A suitable handle, as C, is attached to the shovel by means of a curved iron reinforcing shank i, one end of which is received within a slotted portion of the handle and secured by means of small bolts or rivets passing through the parts and fix d to the shovel bottom and back by means of rivets, as 5 and 6, respectively.

The screen frame or hod is very similar in form to the shovel and is adapted to nicely sit within the latter, as shown. This frame is of sheet metal and comprises two angular sides 7, an integral back end 8, and three offset inturned ledges 9 and 10, respectively. The ledges trend inwardly on a common plane and support a screen D riveted or otherwise atlixed thereto. At the front or open end of the screen frame a stiffening edge or-lipplate 11 is formed of a narrow strip of sheet metal bent upon itself to enclose an edge of said screen and also extension ends of the two led es 9, at which places the parts are secured by spot-welding or riveting, as likewise is the screen and lip-plate aforesaid. The screen is stiffened by means of an underlying extremity 12 of a handle member 13. This handle is of flattened iron and is curved to form an elongated open hand grip, the forward curved extension of which is riveted or otherwise attached to the rear or closed end of the screen frame, as shown.

When the screen is in operative position with the shovel, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the under handle portion rests within a slot 14 or notch in' the top edge of the shovel back, and the lip or front end of the screen rests within the forward open end of the shovel bottom, at which point the same is held from sliding from said shovel by means of small internal side projections or retaining stops 15 attached to or extending from the shovel sides and adapted to engage the front inclinations of the screen sides above the lip aforesaid, the latter of which is designed to extend below said stops and prevent the screen at this end from jarring loose or becoming disengaged until released at the handle extremity. The shovel and its screen, while primarily intended for the sifting and handling of ashes, may be used independently of each other forvarious other, purposes, as will be evident. The parts individually are simple, symmetrical, rigid, and capable of being instantly combined orseparated, as expedient, and form an article admirably adapted to various general uses.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying. drawings, the objects, uses v and general advantages of my invention will, it is believed, be

readily comprehended.

Having, therefore, set, forth v my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s:-

1. In an article of the class set forth, the

combination with a shovel having inwardly pro ect1ng stops rearward of its forward bottom portion and on its sides, and a remov-v able screen section nesting within said shovel in a rearwardly-inclined position with a lip portion adapted to rest on the forward bottom ofsaid shovel and underneath said stops with end sides of'said screen abutting said stops. r I

2. An article of the class set forth comprising a shovel havingretaining stops rearward of its forward bot-tom portion and on its sides, and a screen having a flattened lip across its forward end and formed with a said shovel.
