JOSEPH W. KINSLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT m PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,085, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. KINsLEY, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Files; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawing.
This invention relates to spike-filesthat is, files constructed of a pointed spikefor the filing of letters, papers, memorandnms, checks, slips, &c., by forcing them over its pointed end. The invention consists of a spike-file having its spike adapted at both ends to be attached to and detached from its base or holder. 1
In the accompanying plate of drawing a spike-file embracing this invention is illustrated.
A in the drawing represents a spike-file of which B is the spike and O the base or holder. The spike B is made of wire, which at both ends, a and b, is pointed, and thereat, also, for a portion of the length of the spike is provided with a similar screw-thread, c, to screw into a corresponding screw-socket or opening, d, in the center of the base or holder 0. With the spike B by one end screwed into the screwsocket d of the base 0 the file is completed and fit for use, as ordinarily. By having, however, both ends adapted to be screwed into the base 0 it is obvious, if the spike having papers, 850., on it be detached from the base and then its end over which the papers were placed be attached to the base, the papers, 850., first placed on the spike are the uppermost and those last placed thereon the lowermost, thereby enabling them to be removed one by'one in the precise order filed.
A reversible spike is extremely advantageous, and more especially in banking, insurance, and other offices Where accuracy and system in filing and recording papers, &c., in
the order received are essentials and requisites.
It is not absolutely necessary that both ends of the spike should be pointed, but it is best, for with both ends pointed the spike is ready to receive papers at all times.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paper-file having its spike adapted at both ends for attachment to and detachment from its base or holder, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 14th day of May, A. D.
. JOSEPH W. KINSLEY.
