To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB SARDO, citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Gambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks for doors, and the object is to provide a device which will doubly look a door, and will require a double key with each partacting simultaneously to unlock the door.
Other objects will appear in the subjoined description.
A leading feature of the invention consists of a lock having double bolts for engaging the keeper with which the lock cooperates, with each of these bolts engaged and held in its locked position by two independent spring-actuated bolt locks, the device requiring a double key to simultaneously disengage the spring-actuated bolt locks from the two bolts, and to hold them released while the bolts are being withdrawn from the keeper.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain novel parts and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the lock in its unlocked position, with the outer cover removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the locking bolts thrust out into their locking. position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the double key inserted in the lock, the spring-actuated bolt locks being disengaged thereby from. the bolts, leaving the latter ready to be withdrawn simultaneously with the key into unlocked position. which are carried the compression springs 9, the outer ends of which abut against the outer end walls of the recesses 2 thereby imparting to the bolt-locks 7 a tendency to.
move to the inner ends of said recesses 2. The lower side of each spring-actuated bolt lock 7 has an extension 10 which is received underneath one of the locking bolts 4 (Fig.
6), and just above this extension 10 is a shorter extension 11 which may be termed the locking extension, as it is the part of the bolt-lock that actually engages the bolts to hold them in their locked position. Just above the locking extension 11 at the top side of the bolt lock 7 is the short section 12 having an inclined face 13 adapted to be engaged by the key when the device is to be unlocked,'the key being provided at the outer end of each of its legs with an inclined face 6 for engaging these faces 13 of the bolt-locks. Underneath the longitudinal recesses 6, the bolts are provided with uncutaway portions 4 which are in turn provided with transverse cuts to form the recesses 14 into which are received the projections 11 of the bolt locks. The locking bolts 4 are provided on their inner faces with the bayonet At the inner ends of these dupli' slots 15 into which are received the pins 16, said pins being anchored in the central uncutaway portion 1 of the casing, which arrangement suitably limits the longitudinal movement of the locking bolts in either direction. At their inner ends the locking bolts are provided with the lateral projections 4 to provide an easy means of taking hold of the bolts for withdrawing the same. The legs of the key 6 of my device have the uncutaway portions 6 which abut against the sides of the casing l to limit the inward movement of the key 6 in the lock.
From the foregoing description the operation of my device is for the most part apparent. It need only be added that when the device is unlocked, the bolts 4 and their cooperating bolt-locks 7, are in the relative positions indicated in Fig. 1, with the projections 11 of the several bolt locks in abutting engagement with the uncutaway portions 4 of the bolts. This arrangement permits the bolts to be thrust forward by a push of the finger into the position illustrated in Fig. 2 at which point the projecting portions 11 of the spring-actuated look ing bolt-s 7 engage the cutaway portions 14: of the bolts 4, thereby doubly locking each of said bolts in its outward or locked posi taneously withdrawn till the bolts have reached the position illustrated in Fig. 1, when the key is entirely withdrawn from the lock. The lateral projections 4 011 the ends of the bolts 4, make it easy to simultaneously withdraw the bolts and key with one hand, as the fingers of the operator are simply hooked in behind said projections.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
In a device of the character described, a casing having longitudinally extending recesses; spring pressed bolt locks in said recesses; transverse recesses in said casing intersecting said longitudinal recesses; bolts movable back and forth in said transverse recesses and each provided with cutaway portions for the reception of their respective spring-pressed bolt-locks to lock said bolts; said bolts each having a longitudinal recess and said casing having transverse recesses supplementary to said longitudinal recesses of the bolts; and a key having a leg for each bolt, each of said legs having an inclined face and adapted to be slidably received into said longitudinal and supplementary recesses, said spring-pressed bolt-locks having portions extending into said supplementary recesses into the path of the inclined portions of the legs of the key, whereby when the key is thrust into the lock, the bolt-locks are engaged by said inclined portions of the key and wedged out of engagement with the bolts.
