MEANS FOR SECURING TARPAULINS AND SIMILAR GOVERINGS UPON SHIPS HATCHES.
lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to means, mainly adapted to be used for securing tarpaulins upon ships hatches to render them waterproof in the ordinary way and also to be employed generally in such cases, where a tarpaulin or other similar covering is to be closed up tightly by applying an evenly distributed pressure. The invention comprises a plurality of members adapted to be pressed perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly against and to be withdrawn from the hatch coaming in connection with which they are intended to be used. The invention is'characterized mainly therein, that the clamping members are mechanically operated in a slidable or rotary manner, so thatwhen being moved toward the hatch coaming, they are caused to be rotated before the displace- 'ment so that the several pressure-surfaces move in such direction, that they intersect the displacing direction, and furthermore when being withdrawn from the coamlng,
they are caused first to be displaced to a certain degree and then rotated, so that the pressure surfaces are removed out of tlle'CllS- placing d1rect1on.
The invention may as mentioned above be extensively employed for sundry securing purposes, but in the following statement it will be particularly described as a means of securing 'tarpaulins for ships hatches. When securing such tarpaulins by hand or by means of mechanical devices, such as are commonly employed for this purpose, the tarpaulin, by the forcing of the pressing devices against it, is liable to be torn and de stroyed. This trouble is avoided by the present invention, on accountthereof that the pressing devices are provided in such a manner. Moreover, according to this invention, all the clamping members, arranged along the same side of the hatclrcoaming, are united by means of a common operating device, and thus they are operated simultaneously, hence a considerable saving of Specification of Letters Patent.

board of ships for the purpose mentioned above. Figure 1 shows a plan view of a hatch coaming provlded w th a securing device according to this invention, applied all around it. Fig; 2 shows a side elevation of the hatch coaming. Fig. 3a plan view on a larger scale of a clamping member, attached to the hatch coaming. Fig. 4: a front VlGW "of the same detail with the clamping-1nem ber partly in section along the line A-+A in Fig. 5. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 showsi'de views of the clamping-member in section along the line B-B in Fig. at in different operating positions.
The clamping device 1 is provided with a cylindrical disk 2, eccentrically fixed upon a shaft l, journaled along the hatch-coaming 3, this shaft being supported by bearings 5, placed at suitable intermediate distances, and as shown in the drawing, each bearing being attached close to a clamping-member. The eccentric disk 2 is fitted in a U-shaped member of a guiding block 6 reciprocable in a direction at right angles to the shaft 4, which block is provided with an oblong hole 19, extending parallel to the reciprocating direction of the guiding block, the said shaft 4 passing through the hole 19. All the guiding blocks on the same side of the hatch coaining are secured to an iron batten-bar 7, extending along the entire side of the hatch coaming, which iron-bar should properly be slightly bent outward opposite to each clamping-member, as shown in Fig. 1. With this arrangement the batten bars 7 may be pressed closely against the hatchcoam ing along the whole length of the same, and the intersp'ace betweentwo clampingmembers may be lengthened and thus the number of me mbers'be decreased. The'eccentric 2 is provided with a pin 8 proj ecting vided in one side of the U-shaped portion of the guiding-block 6 forming right angles with the shaft 4, said grooves being curved in a suitable manner and ended by levels 10 and 11 on each side. of the shaft 4, a little below the horizontal level through the center-line of the shaft. hen the pin 8 on account of the rotation of the eccentric 2 in the same direction as the hands of a clock, see Figs. 5-7, has reached the end level 11 ofthe groove 9, it carries with it the guiding block 6 in the rotary movement when continued and thus serves as a conveyer. The rotation of the guiding block 6 in the direction from the hatch-coaming (see the arrow in'Fig. 7) is limited by a pin 12, provided on thebearing-bracket 5 and projecting from its side, and thus the-rotation of the eccentric 2 in this direction will'also be stoipped.
11 the shafts 4, 4 4", and 4 provided around the hatch are at the corners of the hatch-coaming joined by means of bevelgears 13. One of the shafts in the drawing, 4, is provided with a wormwheel 14, meshing with a worm 16, operated by means of a crank 15.
The device operates in the following manner:
Supposing the system to be in the position, shown by Fig. 5, the tarpaulin 17 has been pulled down between tlie'hatch coaming 3 and the batten-bar 7, which' together with the guiding block 6 is in its withdrawn position. When operating the handle 15 all the shafts 4, 4 etc., are rotated to the left (according to Fig. 5) and at the same time the guiding blocks 6, projecting over the eccentrics 2, together with the batten-bars 7 are turned and after that moved toward the tarpaulin 13, which thereby is clamped against the hatch-coaming 3 (see Fig. 6).
The tarpaulin is loosened by rotating the shafts 4, 4, &c., to the right from the position shown in Fig. 6, so that the parts first return to the position, shown in Fig. 5, when the pin 8 of the eccentric 2 touches the bottom level of the groove 9*. By the continued rotation of the shaft to the right, the
guiding blocks 6 and the batten-bars 7 are carried along with the shaft, until all these parts occupy the positions, shown in Fig. 7, when the continued rotation of the guiding blocks 6 to the right is stopped by the pin 12. Now the tarpaulin may easily be withdrawn.
The tarpaulin having again been spread over the hatch, the shafts 4, 4, &c., with the .against the hatch-coaming in the marmer end level 11 of the groove 9 By the continued rotation of the eccentrics 2 the guiding blocks 6 with the batten bars 7 are moved toward the tarpaulin and press it described above. When the hatch is to be sealed for instance by the custom-house oilicers in order to prevent undue opening of the same, it is sufiicient merely to seal the crank 15 or to secure in any adequate manner the worm-gear 14, 16..
r 'I do not want to limit myself to theembodiment described above and illustrated in the drawing, but the details may be varied within the scope of the invention.
By reason of the fact that the grooves 9 and 9* are both located; in the guiding block 6, and the eccentric always touches the block 6 on two diametrically opposite sides (see Fig. 2) the block will be positively rectilinearly displaced by means of the eccentric 2, .slnce as soon as the eccentric 1s revolved and .go beyond the last mentioned groove but precisely into the same.
Having .now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I, claim is:
1. A device. of the character described ineluding in combination, .a hatch coaming,
battenbars for coacting therewith, rotatable shafts, arranged in spaced relation and out wardly of the coaming andcooperative interengaging clamping members secured respectively to the bars and the shafts and designed to coact with the bars so that upon rotation of the shafts in one direction the barswill be first swung and subsequently moved laterally into clamping relation with respect to the covering which is adapted to overlie the coaming and when the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction these clamping members will be first moved laterally away from the coaming and subsequently swung into non-clamping position thereby obviating wear on the hatch cover- 2. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the clamping members each include a reciprocable guiding block, and an eccentric :working in connection with the guiding block and actuating it so that when the eccentric rotates in either direction the guiding block is withdrawn from or pressed against the hatch coarnlng. 4
3.- .A. device of the character described. in
eluding in combination a hatch, a coaming therefor, shafts rotatably mounted on the sides of the hatch but spaced outwardly therefrom, a plurality of sets of cooperative clamping members each including an eccentric on the shaft a reciprocable guiding block of U shaped configuration the eccentric being fitted in the space between the diametrically opposite sides of the block so that the guiding block will always be in contact with two points of the eccentric during rotation of the eccentric.
.4. A device as claimed in claim 3 wherein each guiding block is providedwith an oblong hole through whichthe adjacent shaft passes so as to be guided by said shaft when being moved toward or withdrawn from the hatch coaming.
5. A device as claimed in the claim 8, wherein cooperative means is provided on the eccentric and on the block so that the eccentric after being rotated a certain angle carries the guiding block along with it during the continued rotary movement.
6. A device as claimed in claim 3 wherein each guiding block is mounted so as to also be capable of rotating and a stationary member for limiting the rotation of the guiding block with relation to the hatch coaming.
7. A device as claimed in claim 3 wherein batten bars are provided for clamping a tarpaulin against the hatch coaming, and
V Vmeans for rigidly fastening the bars to the guiding blocks along each side of the hatch so that the bars will follow the combined movements of the guiding blocks.
In testimony whereof I have afliXed my 7 signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR NORLING.
