To aZZfwiom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES O. HOLLI- .DAY, citizen of the `United States, residing at Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and has forone of lits objects to improve the construction `and mcrease the efficiency and utility of devices of this character. t l
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed` device of this characterl wherein provision is made for separating the parts for the purpose of cleansing or repairs.
Another object of the invention is to provide la device of this character which may be constructed of any required" size and operative by hand or other power as may be preferred.
With these and other-objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of theV improved machine; Fig. 2 .is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a section on the' line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in' all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a supporting frame including spaced side rails 10-11 and transverse members l2-18, the side members being suitably supported by legs `14 and with hand-grips formed at the terminals of the side members. Supportedy between the side members 10i-11. and likewise between the transverse members 12-13, is the receptacle or tub portion of the improved device which is preferably formed cylindrical in outline and comprises end members 15,-16, .preferably of wood, and a shell or body 17 preferably of sheet metal such as galvanized iron or the like. At its upper edges the body 17 is bent over the adjacent portions of the members 12-13 in the form of flanges 18-19, as shown, so
that `the shell is supported firmly in position. r1 he upper edge of the tub portion of the device is thus located substantially level with the upper faces-of the s idemembers 10-11 and the transverse members 12--18 as shown. The sidel rails 10u11 are recessed intermediate their ends, as shown at 20 to receive blocks 21-22 having half bear ings in their confronting faces to receive stub shafts 23--24. The blocks 21-22 are united` by clamp bolts represented at 25, which extend through the side rails 10-11 and thus not only unite the blocks io the side rails, but likewise unite the cap portions of the bearings in position upon thc shaft. i
Bearing upon the tub or receptacle portion of the device, is a cover formed with end members 26-27 and segmental sheet metal portions 28-29, and upwardly directed end members Btl-31, thesides 2G`27 being continued upwardly as shown to re ceive the ends of the members 30-31. The segmental plates 28-29 are extended bcneath the members 30-31 and thence er` 'tended upwardly against the inner face of the same to form a water-tight joint. By
this means the cover portion is extended up- -f ber 37 is curved to correspond to -the body of the shell, so that when closed the shell presents a uniform cylindrical drum-like nppearance. Any suitable means may be employed for holding the closure 37 in position, such for instance as a staple and pin represented at 40.
One ofthe stub shafts, for instance the stub shaft 24, is provided with a relatively large gear 41 engaging with a relatively small gear-,42 mounted upon a stud 43, and provided with an operating handle 44. By this simple means it will be obvious that the drum may be rotated at reduced speed by power applied to the crank 44.
y The shell 35 is provided at suitable intervals with longitudinal openings having guideways 36 along their edges to slidably receive frames covered by screen material represented at 45, while the cover 37 is also provided with one of the apertures -having a pair of the guideways and a slidable frame covered by a screen 46, the openings and their screens being preferably located at uniform distances apart. .1 Depending from the inner face of the shell 35, and likewise 'ofare triangular in shape and open at one side,
and as the shell is rotated the hoods pick up the water as they pass' through the/tub and carry it upwardly and discharge it into the interior of the drum, and against the de` flectors 47 which thus operate to throw the water toward the center of the d'um and upon the garments, as hereafter explained.-
j One ofthe deflectors 47 is located at the inner edge of each of the screen-covered apertures as shown, and thu-s causes the` cleansing liquid to be consecutively dashed against the garments as the drum is rotated.
llhe inner converging terminals of the hoods 48 merge substantially into the `adjacent portions of the delector 47, so that the water caught up by the hoods is caused to flow without material retardation against the deflectors and its force thereby materially increased and thrown with accelerated force against the garments in the drums. The screen covered opening being located in close proximity to the deflectors and the` deiiectors projecting for a considerable distance into the drum, the garments are thereby held away from the screens and are thus prevented from clogging them fand at ,the same time prevented from interfering with the free flow of the water from the hoods against the deflectors. This is an important advantage in applicants device materially increases its efficiency and utility.
The end members 26-27 of the cover are provided respectively with small hoods or' lcovers 49%50 which extend over the `upwardly projecting portions of the block members 21, and thus protect the blocks and their bearings. v,
With an apparatus constructed as described, the operation is as follows: rlihe cover is'removed and the closurel 37 opened and the garments inserted into the revolving drum and the cover closed. The garments may be inserted into the drum before the lat-t Licence ter is inserted in the receptacle or tub, and
the latter supplied with the cleansing compound before or after the insertionv of the drum, as may be preferred. The cover is then located over the tub, and motion im parted to the inner drum through the me dium of the crank 44, the rotation of the drum causing the garments to be rapidly `the garments are held away from direct contact with the screen covers andthe openin s,
so that the water flows'freely through t e same.
The improved device is simple in construction, eicient in action and thoroughly agitates and rubs the garments to cause the disintegration of the dirt and grime.
The improved device may be constructed of any required size or capacity and of any suitable material, but will preferably be -of galvanized iron or wood, as before described.
