ArEB-FILE.
To all wiiom it mayco nccrmf Be it known that I, lvrtnrAtrjR Rnrrrna 7 FORD, a subject of the "King' of England, re-
siding at Halifax, in the Province of'Nova Scot1a, Dommion of Canada, have nvented certam new and useful- Improvements in Paper-Files; and I do hereby declare the following tobe afull, clear, an'dexactde scriptlon of the inventlon, such as will'en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful Improvements in paper files of that type including a base member and a clamping member mounted thereon and adapted to hold bills, letters or other papers thereagainst, said clamping member usually comprising a spring urged clip plate.
The volume capacity of such files is limited by the range'of effective resilient action of the clip plate, and in some instances this does not ermit a desired capacity. It is the object of this invention to provide a means for increasing the capacity of such files, and it is more particularly the object to provide, acapacity adjusting arrangement whereby the spring clampmg action of the clip plate of the file may be exerted over different areas with respect to the base member of the file, whereby the limit of effective resilient movement of the clip plate may be at the base member of the file, or may lie outwardlyof the base plate to afi'ordv a volume capacity greater than that afforded by the normal range of movement of the clip plate.
A further object resides in the provision of a volume adjusting means which may be associated with paper files of a general type now on the market whereby thepresent'inventiofi may .find a most ready and economical use in connection with such types of files.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, theinvention resides more particularly in the novelcombination, formation and arrangement of. parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a paper file of generally conventional type and embodying the present capacity adjusting means.
Fig. 2 is an end edge view of the file.
" hpplication'filed February; 25, 1915'. Serial1 T o.'219,083.'
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the adjusting means-on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a sectional view on the line 44.- ofFigJl.
Fig. 5 is a side edge view of the file showing theadjustment thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 designatesthe baseboard of-an ordinary paper file adapted to hold letters, bills and the like, and 6 designates the body plate of the clamping device which in the ordinary use of conventional files of this nature is secured to the baseboard, and which carries a pair of standards 7 mounted on a shaft 8 on which is mounted inturned ears 9 of a clamping plate 9 having its inner end curved toward the board to clampingly hold papers there against under the influence of a spring 10 coiled on the shaft 7 between the standards and having one end bearing against the outer portion of the plate, and its other end bearing against the body plate 6 of the clamping device.
The present invention comprises a means for adjusting the entire mounting for the spring urged clip plate toward and away from the baseboard 5, and in the application of this invention to ordinary files of the type described, the body plate 6 of the clamping mechanism is detached from the baseboard and is secured to the intermediate portion of an elongated plate 11. Threaded posts 12 are securedto the corners of the I 's ai eaiaem genta. JPatented. o t. 14, 1919. Y
baseboard 5 adjacent the clamping device and are loosely passed through the plate 11. Nuts 13 are threaded on the post at the inner side of the plate 11, and wing nuts 14 are threaded on the outer ends of the post to clamp the plate between said nuts and the .nuts 18. Thus the entire clamping device may be adjusted toward or away from the baseboard by shifting the nuts on the posts, and the capacity of the file correspondingly varied without affecting the resilient action of the clip plate so long as a sufiicient thickness of papers is retained on the baseboard in the adjustment for the greater capacity effected by moving'the entire clamping device outwardly.
The present invention may be embodied in paper files during manufacture thereof, in which instance, as is obvious, the standards 7 may be carried directly by the adjusting plate 11, or the invention may comprise an attachment for application to paper files already manufactured. It is appreciated that these various applications may be employed, and various minor changes of structure resorted to without departing in any manner from the spirit of the invention.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A paper file comprising a base member, a carrier connected with the base member and adjustable toward and away from it and a spring pressed clamping jaw pivotally mounted upon the carrier and movable bodily with thecarrier and pivotally with respect to the carrier toward and away from cooperative clamping relation to the base member.
2. A paper file comprising a base member,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for a carrier connected with the base member for adjustment toward and away from it, and a clamping jaw pivotally mounted upon the carrier, the jaw being movable bodily with the carrier toward and away from cooperative clamping relation to the base and being movable pivotally upon the carrier toward and away from clamping relation to the base, the carrier carrying also means for urging the jaw pivotally in a direction {)0 efiect clamping action with respect to the ase.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses. f
