Description
C. W CLARKE.
BREAD SLICER,
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23.1919.
Pat'nted Sept. 30, 1919.
l appertalns to make and use the same.
A TED STATES P ENT oF-Fr CHARLES WESLEY CLARKE, 0F CHARLESTON, WEST VIffmiflllllh'a. v
BREAD-SLICEB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. CLARKE,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bread Slicers; and Ido, hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it This invention relates to a bread slicer, and particularly to a construction embodying a series of knives spaced from each other so as to cut a series of slices in'a single movement of the device.
' The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of the mounting for the slicing knives by which during their downward movement they also receive a lengthwise or drawing travel producing a shearing cut.
A further object of the invention is to providea 'novel mounting for the knives comprising links slid'ably mounted at one end upon the base of the sheer and pivotally connected to the knives at theiropposite end so that draft applied to the knife till frames produces a downward and longitudinal movementof the knives.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved mounting for the knives by which they may lee-spaced .at
different distances apart by means of re-- placea'ble spacing collars disposed between the blades-so that the thickness of the slices" to be cut may be adjusted as desired.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims. In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention; Fig. 2- a detail vertical section. through the knife supporting frame; and
Fig. 3 a similar view through the sliding su port for the links.
ike numerals of reference refer'to like parts in the several figures of the drawings. The numeral 10 designates the base of the machine which ma be of any desired construction or con guratlon and the size thereof varied to accommodate the material to be sliced. As shown in the present illustration this base is provided at one Specification of Letters Patent.

sidewith an upright stop .11 against which one end of the loaf 12 or' other material may be abutted. For the purpose of retain ing the loaf or object 12 against slipping movement during the cutting action, a series of pins 13 may also be provided upon the base 10.
The slicingknives 14 may be of any'desired construction and configuration and the number or character thereof varied as found most convenient. These knives are mounted at their opposite endsupon cross rods 15 and spaced from each other by means of collars 16. These'collars may be of various lengths and are interchangeable so that the space between the knives and the consequent thickness of the slices vto be cut may be varied. Onerod 15 is pivotally mounted at its opposite ends'in the upper ends 17 of the links 18 and" the parts suitably clamped together by means of nuts 19 threaded upon the opposite ends of therod. The supporting links 18 just described are applied at one end of the series or gang of knives while at the opposite end a ban;- dle frame 20 is provided and has the opposite end members 21 mounted upon the rod and the intermediate member 22 similarly disposed. These parts 21 and 22 are connected to the rod or knives so as to form a rigid'attachment bywhich a downward and forward movement may be imparted to the entire structure when pressure is applied to the hand-hold 23. I
The lower ends ofthe supporting links of the casings or housings 24 which have flanges28 to embrace and support a sliding block 25 provided upon its upper surface with pivoting ears 26 between which the lower ends of the links are mountm by .18 are slidably mounted upon the base 10 in 7 any desired manner, for instance, by means in Fig. 1 to that indicated by dotted lines therein. While this invention has been particularly shown as applied for slicing bread and is adapted for that purpose, still it is not confined thereto as the structure is capable of application for slicing any desired material and for varying the width and thickness of such slices as may be desired.
The specific construction of the knife connections and mounting for the links has been described and shown but the invention is not confined thereto as changes may be made within the scope of the following claims.
hat I claim is 1 1; In a slicer, a base, supporting links slidably mounted thereon at one end, and a cutting knife pivotally connected to the opposite ends of said links.
2. In a slicer, a base, blocks slidably mounted thereon, su 'aporting links pivoted at one end to said blocks, a connecting rod extending between the opposite ends of said links, a series of spaced knives mounted upon said connecting rod. and a connecting rod extending between the opposite ends of said series of knives for supporting the same.
In a slicer, a base, blocks slidably mounted thereon, supporting links pivoted at one end to said blocks, a connecting rod extending between the opposite ends of said links, a series of spaced knives mounted upon said connecting rod, a connecting rod extending between the opposite ends of said series of knives for supporting the same, and a yoked handle mounted upon said lastmentioned connecting rod.
4. In a slicer, a base, a housing mounted thereon, a slide block disposed within said housing and retained thereby against vertical movement, a pivoting lug carried by l sald block, a supporting link carried by said lug, and a slicing knife pivotally con- 5 nected to the upper end of said link.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CHARLES WVESLEY CLARKE.
