APPARATUS .FOR SHARPENING SAFETY-RAZOR BLADES.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application iled .T une 1, 1918. Serial No. 237,744.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GIULIO NoUvEnNn, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Milan, Italy, has invented certaln new and useful 'Improvements in or Relating to Apparatus for Sharpening Safety-Razor Blades, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in apparatus for sharpening safety razor blades. An apparatus embodying the features of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings. Figure l is a sectional elevation of the apparatus, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 a perspective view illustrating the manner in which the blade holder may be inserted into the apparatus and reversed.
The blade holder consists of two clamping plates 1 and 2 which are held in their proper relative position with regard to one another by pins or rojections 3, 3 fixed to or formed on one o the plates and adapted to enter corresponding holes in the razor blade and the second clamping plate. The blade 4c is held by the said clamping plates 1 and 2. The clampin plates l and 2 are at one end bent outwar 1y so as to form ears 5 and 6. By pressing these handles together, the plates l and 2 may be moved apart so as to release the blade and facilitate the insertion of another blade.
Between the handles 5 and 6 and the portions of the plates holding the blade, the width of the plates is reduced. These narrow portions 7 of the plates form a pivot which is rmly held in either of the two operative positions ofthe holder in an eye 8 formed on or attached to the frame of the apparatus. The eye and the pivot portion 7 of the holder are so shaped that the holder may be easily turned around 180 degrees in the eye when it is desired to reverse the blade in order to sharpen the other face of thel blade. Both edges of one face of the blade are sharpened simultaneously by means of sharpening rollers 9, the blade is then reversed and the two edges of the other face are again sharpened simultaneously.
The plates 1 and 2 are provided at the end opposite to the ears 5 and 6, with holes or perforations 10 corresponding to one another. Through these holes passes a spring catch or pawl 11 which holds the blades against the rollers, but may be released in order to reverse the holder with the blade.
The sharpening rollers 9 consist each of an inner cylindrical core of hard wood and an outer spiral band of leather wound over the core. The rotary movement of the rollers is effected by means of a handle 12 and intermediate toothed gear 13. The frame 14 of the apparatus is so shaped as to form two rings or loops 15, 15 into which two fingers may be inserted to hold the apparatus during the sharpening operation.
I claim as my invention:
1. A blade sharpener for safety razors, comprising a frame having side plates, sharpening rollers journaled in said side plates, a handle and ear wheels journaled in said frame and drlving said sharpening rollers in reverse directions, an upwardly projecting eye carried by one of said side plates and a spring catch carried by the o posite side plate, and holding plates for t e razor blade extending across the space between said side plates andV parallel to said rollers, said holding plates being slotted near one end to engage said spring catch and having their opposite ends passing through said eye, substantially as described.
2. A blade Sharpener for safety razors, comprising a frame having side plates, sharpening rollers journaled in said sido plates, a handle and gear wheels journaled in said frame and drlving said sharpening rollers in reverse directions, an upwardly projecting eye carried by one of said side plates and a spring catch carried by the opposite side plate, and holding plates for the razor blade extending across the space between said side plates and parallel to said rollers, said holding plates being slotted near one end to engage said spring catch and having their opposite ends passing through said eye, and terminatin in divergent ears, substantially as descri ed.
