FLOSSA. SCOTT, OF SUGAR GROVE, VIRGINIA.
GUARD FOR SCISSORS-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application led October 2, 1917. Serial No. 194,345.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FLossA SCOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sugar Grove, in the county of Smyth and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards for Scissors-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved attachment for handles of shears or scissors.
Its principal object is to provide a guard for the interior of the handles of scissors to prevent the formation of blisters and corns on the fingers when using the scissors.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guard yof this kind made of solid rubber, so that it may yield to the pressure of the fingers.
Still another object is the provision of a guard of this character capable of being detached from the scissors handles, so that its renewal or repair may be effected with little trouble.
Still another object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction and which may be manufactured cheaply and therefore placed on the market at a low rice.
Cther and further objects will appear in the detail description which follows.
To the exact construction by means of which the device is illustrated, the invention is not to be restricted. Practice may suggest certain desirable changes and these the right is claimed to make, in so far as they may be compatible with the spirit of the appended claim. n
In the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan of a pair of scissors equipped with the improved guard.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the handles of the scissors taken on the line through the center of the thickness of the handles.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fi 1.
lVith reference to the drawings, there is shown a pair of scissors 1 equipped with the fingers handle 2 and a thumb handle 3. Both the handles 2 and 3 are provided with slots 4 formed on their interior peripheries. At the upper and lower ends of the handles,
the transverse holes 5 are formed, these holes 5 passing transversely through the slots 4.
Rubber guards G corresponding in shape to the shapes of the handles are adapted to set in the latter and to lie against the inner perimeter thereof. Ribs 7 are formed integrally with the guards 6 and these ribs enter the slots 4 previously referred to and are provided with holes 8 which register with the holes 5 in the handles. The main portions of the guards G are selnicircular in cross sectionaloutline and 'at the point where they blend into the ribs 7, they lie against the inner perimeter of the handles, thus providing a rubber guard for each of the handles on the interior edges thereof.
The holes 8, when the guards are first constructed, are made relatively smaller than the holes 5 -and the pins 9 are designed to pass loosely from the holes 5 and frictionally engage the holes 8. These pins together with the rubbers 7 effect substantial connections between the guards 6 and the handles 2 and 3 but, when the pins are removed, the guards may be easily removed from the handles because of the elasticity or resiliency of the material of which they are made.
The protective quality afforded the fingers by the guards 6 is obvious. That the guards 6, in the event of becoming worn or damaged, may be replaced is evident, it being only necessary to withdraw the pins 9, remove the old guards and replace with new ones, the pins 9 being reinserted through the hples 5 and 9 to hold the new guards in ace.
It will be observed that the ribs 7 of the guards 6 by entering the slots 4 of the handles, secure the guards at every point throughout their perimeter against transverse displacement in the handles.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
The combination with a pair of scissors having handles formed with slots en the inner peripheries thereof, of rubber guards conforming to the contour of the handles, the said guards having ribs on their outer peripheries which ribs rest in the said slots, the body portions of the guards being of the same thickness as the handles and forming guards by engagement of the fingers With shoulders Where they adjoin the ribs, the the outer peripheral edges thereof is obvishoulders abutting the inner edges of the ated, the guards at the same time shielding 10 handles on opposite sides of the slots, the the lingers from the inner peripheral edges 5 opposite sides of said body portions lying of the handles. Hush With the corresponding sides of said In testimony whereof ll aix my signature. handles, whereby the liability to displace the 'FLOSSA SCOTT.
