IMPR VEMENT IN BUCKLES FOR HARNESS-TRACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,658, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER BURNS, of Sy-v racuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have .invented a new and Improved Buckle for Harness and Trace; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists of an improved I harness-buckle,'which is provided with a re-, tractible'tongue and pivoted bail for holding the trace, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved buckle; Fig. 2 a side elevation, partially in section; and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the spring-tongue.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the main portion of the buckle, constructed of any proper material and suitable size, which is provided with the usual loops at a, by means of which attachment is readily m ade with the barn ess. D represents a bail, pivoted by means of a central bar to the body of buckle A, as shown, the bar (I of which is provided with a recess adapted to inclose the end of the tongue b upon one side, andsupport it when a strain is brought to bear upon it.
The manner of using my improved buckle is as follows: into the buckle and adjusted to any desired length, if the bail be first turned outward and the tongue be retracted. When the proper hole has been reached, if the tongue is freed it will be caused, by the force of the spring, to enter the hole. The bail then being turned inward to its place serves to givethe pin a bearing when a strain is exerted upon it, and
also to hold the trace securely in placeits combined pressure on the trace serving to relieve the tongue of much of the strain.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a harness-buckle the combination of the spring or retractible tongue B, and pivoted bail D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
