Description
.I. DISTER. LARD CAN.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-4.1916- 1 ,3 1 6,285 Patented Sept. 1-6, 1919.
fave/2Z5? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DISTER, 0F HAMILTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR. TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LARD-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 4, 1916. Serial No. 123,622.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH DISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ham ilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lard-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to containers of the character covered by Patent No. 1,073,859 to Walden S. Laskey, granted Sept. 25, 1913.
The invention, however, has other and broader application as will be apparent as it is better understood.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of a cover for a container of the character described in said Letters Patent which will insure the formation of a perfect closure and will materially aid in preventing any deformation of the container body in looking the cover in place.
In the patent mentioned it is contemplated to provide a wire in the edge of the slip cover which may be drawn tightly about the container body after the cover is in place to prevent its inadvertent removal and also to provide a tight seal for the container; a container having the cover so locked in place is adapted to be opened by severing the wire to release the tension created about the flange of the cover.
Containers of this character are frequently 4 used for lard and other substances of such nature that the container should be kept closed after it is first opened, these contamers bein large and used frequently for shipment in ulk. V
A further object of this invention is the provision of a container closure of this character which will provide an effective substantially hermetic closure after the wire has been cut and for use until the package or container is empty.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a slip cover having a flange adapted to extend down about the outside of the container body and having also a plurality of friction walls enga firmly and in metal to metal contact frlction walls correspondingly arranged on the body.
Other objects and advantages of the in? vention will be apparent as it is better un derstood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawin illustrating a preferred embodiment t ereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the container embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a large sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view on a somewhat reduced scale.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the drawing a oontainer body 3 having depressions 6 near its upper edge and terminating in the reinforced edge 4 formed by curling over the extremity 5 of the body. The curled over edge 4 is preferably of relatively large diameter. The cover 7 is depressed near its edge and at its center 8 is somewhat domed to permit yielding about the connection 11 with the portion of the cover beyond the center. This portion extends upwardly from the depressed part 11 to form a friction wall 10 and is bent therebeyond in a curve 12 and downwardly, forming a friction wall 9. The lower edge of the wall or flange 9 is provided with a plurality of spaced lips 13 in which the locking wire 14 is held, these lips being bent up around the wire as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The wire 14 has a loop 15 which may be compressed, as indicated in dotted lines, to lock the cover in place. This draws the wire tightly about the body of the container, which is of relatively yielding material.
The friction walls 9 and 10 embrace the curled edge 4 which forms friction walls in engagement with the friction walls 9 and 10" the cover at erably made of thin sheet metal to be read- L ily yieldable. The cover portions disposed about the wire constitute curved flanges embracing it and the spacing of these flanges tight closure to prevent contamination of the contents between the times when the cover is removed to provide access to the interior.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparentthat various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without depart ng from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
