Description
W. R. COLE.
Improvement in Window-Curtain Cord-Attachments.
N0, 131,5G3. Patented Sep.24,1872.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM ROBERTS COLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
. IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-CURTAIN CORD ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,503, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ROBERTS COLE, of the city of Baltimore and State of of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Window-Curtain 00rd Attachments of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that the'same is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a device over which the cord of a window-curtain is returned upwardly toward the sheave attached to the curtain-roller; and is so constructed that the point around which the cord passes is capable of graduated adjustment, operating so as to produce that tension upon the cord necessary to the satisfactory elevating or lowering of the curtain.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention. Fig.2 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a modification of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention'in all the figures.
A is a metallic plate, preferably brass, adapted at its ends to be secured to the face of the window-frame. Of that part of the metallic plate raised from the surface to which the ends thereof are fastened, a portion is stamped or out out, the opening formed having the outline of a continuous series of rack or ratchet-toothed cavities, a, leading into a vertical slot, at. The right-hand edge of this raised part of the plate is turned or bent over forming a vertical guiding-strip, a. The pin 1) of a small knob, b, passes. through a yoke, c, and the slot a, and is screwed into a nut, c. The other end of the yoke is provided with the cord-knob d, shaped suitably for the reception of the cord. The knob d may be fixedly inserted within the yoke c, or adapted to revolve, as the manufacturer may elect.
The operation of the device is the following: The cord is placed over the knob d and leads upwardly over the roller-sheave. The pull of the cord tends to keep the end 0 of the yoke confined between the plate and its guiding strip a. To give the desired tension to the cord, the pin b is drawn to the right of the slot at, and downwardly by the action of the hand upon the knob b to the point sought. The knob is then released, the elasticity of the cord and the leverage of the yoke 0 together forcing the pin b as a 'pawl into contact with the next tooth above it of the rack. The angle given to the teeth of the rack is such as is best suited to the angle assumed by the yoke a when in position.
In Fig. 3 the slot a bears the same relation to the device as the guiding-strip'a. The pin of the knob d passes through the slot and is provided with a nut, d, at the back of the plate A. The yoke c is guided by means of the pin and slot for the same uses and purposes, as have been hereinbefore mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the plate A, having the toothed and slotted opening a a and guidingstrip a, with the yoke c, knob, pin, and washer I) b c, and cord-knob d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name in the city of Baltimore this 17th day of August, A. D. 1872.
WILLIAM ROBERTS COLE.
Witnesses Gno. H. HOWARD, Tnos. MURDooH.
