UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID M. ANDERSON, or wnsrwoon, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 W. F. HESSEL, or
- new YORK, N. Y. a
LAMP HOLDER AND GUARD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,DAv 1D M, ANDERsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Westwood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders and Guards, of whlch the following is a specification, reference belng had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention comprises a combined lamp holder and guard.
While it is capable of many uses, it is especially adapted. as a CELIIIBI and protector for incandescent lamps and the like where it is desirable that they may be used in inaccessible places without danger of breakage. It is contemplated among the objects of the invention to provide a holder and guard, the holder beingmade preferably of some non-conducting material which will be light and strong and which will constitute a base wherein may be solidly anchored a metallic foundation upon which the guard may be mounted; wherein a. lamp may be securely anchored, and provision made to protect the socket and other parts from moisture and the like; whereon a guard may be placed so that it may be readily attached and detached and locked in attached position.
It is a further objectwithin the contemplation of the inventionvto provide a guard,
' the different components of which are made of light, strong, strain-resisting material, wherein the guard-members are shaped and connected so as to offer a maximum resist- .ance to any pressure which may be exerted .against the guard from the outside and in the direction of the lamp; and with which there is associated a means for hanging the lamp and guard as a whole.
Other ObJeOtS and advantages will in part be apparent and in part be brought out more fully in the description which follows.
Drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention are hereto annexed, the following views being shown:
Figure l'is a View in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a view'in longitudinal section; i Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional viewon theline 3- 3 of 1;

pass screws or other.
In these drawings, numeral 1 designates a Patented Sept.-2, 1919.
Application filed February 7, 1919. Serial No. 275,656. a
combined base section and holder, the lower portion of which is formed to constitute a handle or a baseupon which it may rest, as
. desired. The upper portion constitutes an anchorage for a guard and a holder for a lamp. To this end it is provided with a projecting rib portion 2, channeled peripherally to constitute a ledge or the like 3 and bored centrally to comprise a lamp socket holding orifice 4 and an opening forwires.
guard-holding-member comprising a central sect on 5 connected with an outer annular section 6, as by ribs 7. In angular relation to the outer peripheral section 6, there is a .Upon the. rib portion 2, there is mounteda 1;
threaded collar portion or flange 8, as best seen in Fig. 5, which section is provided with openings 9 through which are adapted to securing means 10. These latter constitute a means for holding a lamp socket 11 securely within the orifice 4 and for this purpose the socket may be provided with a groove 12 in which one end of these screws is adapted to seat when in proper position within the flange. The
upon the socket, as by screws 13 passing through openings 14 disposed in the web portion 7.
Adapted to be associated with the guardguard-holding member may also be secured holding member, there is a guard comprising a base portion 15 internally threaded to be associated with the thread on the flange or collar portion 8 of the guard-holding member and upon which base portion there are mounted a plurality of upwardly extending guard members 16. These extend a certain distance in approximate parallelism where they are joined by cross connections 17 in horizontal arrangement, and from this point converge, being joined at their outer.
extremities when there may be provided a hook or supporting member 18. The guard herein illustrated is an integral casting as distmguishedfrom devices heretofo-re in use wherein the component parts were securedtogether .in varlous ways as by soldering, clamping or other form or connection-.'- This is a valuable feature of the I inventionrendering the guard strong and r 1eandca$y t a ure-1,
Means vare also provided for locking the:
guard as a Whole upon the guard-holding member, and to this end, and asibest seen in Fig. 3, the guard-holding member is provided with J a depression or groove 19 within Which there is adapted to screw which is threaded'intothe base 7 any. ype of lamp; an
