-om FOR SIGNAL-LAMPS.
Specification of I etters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed December 18, 1906. Serial No. 292,169.
1'0 all whom it may concern: I I
Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. GILMAN, a citizen of theUnitedQ StatesJgesiding at Mont clair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Caps for S' a Lamps, of which the following is a full, fir, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to a cap for signallamps; and its object isto provide a cap of simple design in which the usual opalescent lens is held in place by a shield which serves to protect the same; This utilization of the shield to hold the lens in position provides for the assembly of the cap, lens, and shield in a single operation.
My invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lampsocket with myimproved cap in position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of my invention. Fig. 3 1s a central longitudinal section thereof. Figs. 4 and 5 are front and rear elevations, res ectivel'y.
Like letters of re erence refer to like parts wherever they are shown.
The body. of the cap consists of a tubular member A, having slots cut in the rear portion thereof toform sp members B, adapted to fit in the'socket o? the lam C in the usual manner. The front end of the cap has an annular flange a, the inner ortion of which is beveled to conform to t e convex bottom surface of the ogalescent lens D.
The shield or guard. has perforations e, through which the lens D, commonly known as an opa is visible. In assembling the parts the opal or lens D is laced upon the end of the cap A, the guard IE is laced over it, and the rim e of the guard is t on turned or spun under the flange a, thus securely umtlng the three parts. The shield preferably bears against the opal only near its base and at the front portlon is sufficiently removed from the opal to thoroughly protect it.
By my invention a lamp cap and guard of simple construction is rovlded which is easily assembled, in whic the opal isthoroughly protected, and in which the rim of the shield is so seated and secured that a blow cannot readily loosen it Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a cap for signal-lamps, the combination with a tubular member, of a lens seated at one end of the same, and a perforated cu shaped member secured upon the end of t e tubular member, the rim of said cup-shaped member bearing upon said lens to. prevent its dis lacement, and the central portion thereof eing removed from thelens to form a shield in front of the same.
2. In a-cap for signal-lam s, the combina tion with a tubular member aving an annular flan e at one end, of a lens seated outside of said flange, and a perforated shield having its rim turned under said flange, whereby the lens is held in position and protected, substantially as described. v
3. In a cap for signal-lamps, the combina= tionwith a tubular member having a concave seat and an outwardly-turned annular flange at one end, of a lens mounted in said concave seat, and a erforated cup-shaped shield adapted at the mner side of its base to bear u on said lens and provided with an in turns lip e aging beneath said flange, whereby said fiiield holds said lens in position and protects the same.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 14th day of September, A. D. 1905.
FRANCIS L. GILMAN. Witnesses:
GEORGE A. HAMILTON, Jsmts L. MOQUAINE.
