. ALEXANDER GRAY IRWIN AND WILLIAM GEORGE IRWIN, OF WINNIPEG, MANITOBA,
CANADA.
DOOR-LATCH.
Application filed November 21, 1917.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER GRAY IRWIN and WVILLIAM Grocer: IRWIN, both of the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Latches, of which the following is the specifieation. The invention relates to improvements in latches for doors and such like and the principal object of the invention is to provide a latch which can be readily manipulated to open from either side of the door by a down thumb pressure applied on the thumb piece provided at each side of the door.
A further object of the invention is to construct the appliance in a simple, durable and eflicient manner and so that it can be manufactured at small cost and can be installed conveniently.
W'ith the above objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents an exterior view of the appliance as installed on a door and jamb, only a fragmentary portion of the door and jamb being shown.
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detailed vertical sectional view through the door showing the latch, part in slde view and part in section and in the normal or closed position.
Fig. 3 represents a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 with the latch in open position and as brought to this position by pressure applied on the outer thumb latch.
Figs. t and 5 represent enlarged detailed vertical sectional views through the upper ends of the handles and positioned relatively as placed on the door.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
1 represents a portion of a door and 2 the jamb, it being understood for the purpose of this disclosure that the door is closed in against the jamb in the ordinary way.
3 represents the ordinary form of door latch in the nature of a flat bar having one end, that 3, projecting beyond the edge 0t Specification of Letters Patent.

the door and the other end, that 3", pivotally secured as indicated at 1 to the door. The latch is guided in the customary latch guide 5 screwed to the door as indicated at 6 and is adapted in the closed position of the door to catch behind the catch 7 of the ordinary type secured to the jamb.
My invention does not relate'to any of the above parts as they are of ordinary construction but it has to do with means for manipulating the latch to release the door and comprises the parts now described.
8 and 9 represent inner and outer handles permanently fastened such as by wood screws 10 and 11 t0 the face of the door and disposed in the same vertical plane but with the handle 8 in a slightlyhigher position than that 9.
The upper ends of the handles are both fitted with vertically disposed opposing slots 12 and 13, that at 12 being considerably -longer than that at 13 and the slots are connected through the door by a cross slot 14 in the door which increases gradually in cross section in passing from the slot 12 to that at 13.
lVhile we have distinctly described three slots 12, 13 and 14, still for the purpose of the following description and claims we wish these to be considered as a single tapering slot passing from the interior to the exterior of the door and through the upper part of the handles.
15 represents an outer thumb latch provided on the underside with a downwardly extending pivot lug 16 pocketed in a socket 17 located adjoining the base of the slot 13 and provided further with a horizontally disposed comparatively short arm like extension 18 passing approximately half way .into the slot in the door. The inner end of the extension is rounded ell as shown at 19.
20 represents an inner thumb latch provided on theunderside with a downwardly extending pivot lug 21 mounted in a socket 22 located adjoining the base of the slot 12 and fitted further with an arm like horizontally disposed extension 23 which extends from one side to the other side of the door and is positioned directly above the extension 18 and directly beneath the latch 33, I
In the normal or closed position of the latch- 8 the thumb latches or extensions take the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. 7
If it is desired to open the door from the inside, one simply grasps the handle 8 and applies thumb pressure on the latch 20 which rocks on the pivot lug and causes the extension 23 to raise the latch 3 from the catch 7 On the other hand, if one desires to open the door from theoutside he grasps the handle 9 and applies down thumb pressure on the thumb latch 15 which action causes the said latch to rock on the pivot lug 16 to throw up the inner end of the extension 18, which in turn efiects the rocking of the extension 23 (see Fig. 3) and the consequent raising of the latch 3.
What we claim as our invention is The combination with a door having a vertically disposed cross slot therein, a door latch pivoted to the door and with the free end crossing the slot and a pair of handles permanently secured to the door and provided with slots registering with the door slot, of a thumb latch provided on the underside with a downwardly extending pivot lug socketed in the upper part of one of the handles and with a horizontally disposed extension extending within the slot in the door and a second thumb latch provided on the underside with a downwardly extending pivot lug socketed in the upper end of the other of the handles and fitted with a horizontally disposed extension passing into and through the door and handle slots and positioned between the" door latch and the former extension.
