Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THORLEIF STOKKE and AnoLr LARSEN, both of Hillevaag, near Stavanger, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Opening Mechanism for Hermetic Boxes and the like; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates to an opening mechanism for hermetic boxes or cans of the type in which there is provided in the cover an opening lip or tongue formed in the material of the cover by means of a weakened line and which may be made accessible by an opening key or the like by piercing the cover at the weakened line near the said tongue or lip and bending the same upward.

According to the present invention the weakened line which serves to form the said tongue or lip has the form of a closed curve one part of which extends along the edge of the cover, while another part of the curve is formed by an internally pro jecting hoop or bow so that there is formed on one side of the cover two adjacent oppositely directed tongues, one or both of which may be used for opening the box.

On the drawing is illustrated a form of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan of the cover, and Fig. 2 is a similar plan with one tongue broken up.

The weakened line 1 comprises an inwardly projecting circular curve 2, by means of which there are formed two tongues or lips 4, 5, separated by a narrow strip 3. The tongues may be made accessible in the usual manner by piercing the cover at the weakened line near one end of the tongues and bending the same upward as indicated on Fig. 2. Claim:

In an arrangement for opening hermetic boxes and the like a weakened opening line in the cover of the box, said opening line having the form of a double closed curve, the exterior part of which runs along the edge of the cover while the interior part of the curve is formed by an inwardly projecting hoop or bow, said two parts of the curve forming at one or both of their connections an opening lip or tongue which may be utilized for opening the box by piercing the weakened line and bending up the tongue or lip in the usual manner.
