Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 14. 1919. Serial No. 276,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR G. WIL'LIAM SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain View, in the county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ScreenDoor Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a fastener for doors or other movable structures.
The primary object of the invention is, the provision of a fastener of this character wherein a closure can be readily and easily locked with respect. to the casing and also unlocked when the occasion requires, it being especially designed for use on swinging screen doors. The invention is novel in form to assure the easy fastening and unfastening of the door with despatch.
Another object of the invention is, the provision of a fastener of this character, where in the same is made from two lengths of wire of the required gage and one of the lengths being of the requisite resiliency for the snap fastening of one member with the other in the use of the same, the members of the fasteners being of novel form to permit the fastening and unfastening of a door in a convenient manner.
,A further object of the invention is, the provision of a fastener of this character which is extremely simple in construction, possessing but few parts, strong, durable, efficient in its operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Figure 1, is a fragmentary perspective view showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied and in latched or fastened position.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary side elevation showing the fastener released or disengaged.
Fig. 3, is a detailed perspective view of the catch member of the fastener.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A, designates generally a portion of a screen door and B a portion of the door casing which are of any ordinarywell known con struction. The fastener comprises a pair of swin ing members 5 and 6 respectively, the mem er 5 being formed from a single length of wire having the required rigidity and length. Formed at one'end of the member 6, is an attaching eye 7 through which is passed a nail, screw or the like for the pivotal mounting of the member 5 upon the door casing B, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, while at the opposite end of said member 5 is an elongated closed loop 8, constituting a keeper eye for the detachable engagement therein of the other member 6, hereinafter fully described.
The member 6 is formed from a single length of wire bent at one end to provide an attaching eye 9 which has passed therethrough, screw eye or the like for swingingly mounting the member 6 upon the door A. The other end portion of the member 6 is bent laterally at 10 and turned on itself to provide a stationary or fixed finger engaging loop or grip 11 and the substantially U-shaped resilient jaw 12, which is disposed crosswise of the member 6 at right angles thereto, while at the free terminal of the jaw 12 is a finger engaging loop or grip 13 corresponding to the grip 11, while adjacent this last named grip 13 is a bight forming a shoulder .14, the U-shaped jaw 12 being normally spread and its resiliency permits the snapping engagement thereof in the keeper loop 8 of the member 5 for the looking of the fastener when the door Ais closed.
It will be noted that the limb of the jaw 12 crossing the lateral off-set portion 10 is the stationary limb and is backed by this laterally off-set portion 10 so that the grip 11 will not bow or become distorted in the direction of the grip 13 when pressure is applied to both the grips 11 and 13 for contracting the jaw 12 to permit its insertion in the keeper 8 or its removal therefrom, the other limb of the jaw being freely resilient for the contracting and expanding of the jaw in the use of the fastener.
Cognizance has been taken of Letters Patent Number 1,023,747 dated April 16, 1912, as to the specific construction of fasteners shown therein and the salient feature of the present invention resides in the specific form of the member 5 and also the specific form of the jaw 12 of the member 6 of the fastener hereinbefore described.
In the use of the device, the member 5 is mounted upon the door or casingB. while the member 6 is mounted upon the door A, and in latching the door thej aw 12 is con tracted for its free insertion in the keeper 8 of the member 5, the contracting of the jaw .12 being effected by pressure upon the grips 11 and 13, and on the insertion ofthe aw in the keeper 8 the pressure is relieved from the grips and the jaw 12 expands under its resiliency so that the shoulder 14 will lockthe jaw in the keeper 8, thereby fastening the members 5 and 6 together. The manner of removing the jaw 12 from the keeper 8 to separate the members 5 and 6 will be clearly obvious and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted; The keeper 8 is in a plane at rightangles to theplane of the attaching eye 7 of the member 5 so that the jaw can be freely inserted in the, loop constituting thekeeper 8 or removed therefrom.
Fromthe foregoing it willbe noted that there is provided a hook which is burglar proof in that itcannot beopened from the portion being bent laterally and" turned on itself to-provide a finger grip and a substantially U-shaped jaw having one of its limbs lying crosswise of the laterally bent portion and at rightangles to the length of the member, the other limb being formed witha looking shoulder, and a finger engaging grip at the free extremity of said other limb.
