l Specification of Letters Patent.
Application iled January 2, 1917. Serial No. 140,174.
T0v all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EUGENE G. REISING, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Firing-Pin for Firearms, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to the class of devices that are employed in firearms to strike the cartridge and cause its explosion; and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that shall be simple and durable in its construction and particularly one in which the firing tip may be readily removed from or replaced on the main part of the pin.
One form of deviceembodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail view in central longitudinal section through a breech-bolt containing my improved firing pin.
Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved firing pin with parts thereof cut in central longitudinal section.
Fig'. 3 is a detail side view of'a portion of the body of the pin.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates a breech-bolt that may be of any ordinary material and constructed in any desired manner, that herein shown having a rib 6 extending alon the bottom at its rear end and within which a sear or sears 7 are pivotally mounted and that may be operated by means of a trigger or other members (not herein shown) in a manner that will be readily understood `by those skilled in the art, and the invention forming' the subject matter of this application having to do with the firingl pin only the illustration and description erein is suficient for' acorrect understanding of my invention. i
The firing pin comprises a body 8 that is in the usual form of a rod having threaded `ends 9 and 10. A head 11 is secured to the screw threaded end 10, said head having a neck 12 projecting inwardly and inclosmg a portion of the body of the pin as shown in lFig. 2 of the'drawin s. The Sear or sears 7 act against the s Oulder 13 at the end of the neck 12 to hold the rin pin in its cocked position in the breech-bo t, to
which cocked position it is moved as by means of a lever (not shown herein) which acts against the shoulder 14 at the inner end of the head l1, itv being understood that said lever acts to-move the breech-bolt backwardly in its chamber in thel receiver and at the same time said lever acts against the shoulder 14 to move the firing pin backwardly in the breech-bolt until it is engaged by the sear 7 in which position the fringpin is held until released by movement of the sears. The sears are held in such engagement by means of a spring pressed plunger 15 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A collar 16 is secured to the body 8 in any suitable manner and in connection with a retaining pin 17 extending through an opening 18 in the breech-bolt serves to limit the backward movement of the ring pin within said bolt. A spring 19 is employed to hold the firing pin at the forward limit of its play in a manner common to devices of this class. A flange 20 is formed on the body of the firing pin, this flange having means to receive and retain a lock. In the form of construction herein shown this means preferably consists of slots 21 formed on diametrically opposite sides of the ange 20. A firing tip 22 fits the screw threaded end 9 of the body of the pin and is screwed up against the flange 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
A lock 23 is mounted to slide on the body 8, this lock being in the form of a collar and having locking prongs 24 extending through the slots 21 and into notches 25 in the back edge of the firing tip 22, and as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The firing tip is held in its locked position as by means of the prongs 24 extending from the lock 23 through the slots in the flange 20 on the body 8 and into the recesses 25 in said tip.
The construction herein illustrated and described provides a very simple and `dur- Patented Ang. 26, 1919.
that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claiml 1. A firing pin comprising a body having a threaded end With a flange on said pin and a slot in said flange, a ring tip fitting said screw threaded end, a lock mounted on the body, and a member to unite the lock and firing tip, said member extending through the. slot in said flange.
2. ring pin comprising a body having a threaded end and a flange adjacent to said thread and with a slot in said flange, a firing tip fitting the threaded end and 15 having a notch in its edge, and a lock mounted upon the body and having a prong extending through said slot and engaging the notch in the edge of the firing tip.
p 3. A firing pin comprising a body having a thread at one end With a ange adjacent to said thread, a firing tip engaging said thread, a lock mounted upon said body, an interengaging member extending between said lock and tip and passing through a slot in said iange, and a head removably secured to the opposite end of said pin.
