To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRANT W. HERSHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of 'Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting-Crank Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive yet highly eflicient and reliable device to prevent automobile and other motors from back-firing and injuring the person cranking the same. With this object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and unique arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a substantially cylindrical casing preferably formed of cast metal and provided with laterally extending angular arms 2 and a depending lug 3, said arms being adapted for bolting to the frame 4 of an automobile, while the lug 3 is designed to abut the front bar of the frame as shown. A ring 5 fits snugly in the casing 1 between the ends of the latter and is secured therein against rotation and against shifting longitudinally of the casing, byscrews 6, the inner side of said ring being provided with a wedge shaped recess 7 in which a roller 8 is received. Front and rear end plates 9 and 10 are provided for the casing 1, said rear end plate being secured to the casing by screws or the like 11 while the plate 9 fits into the casing, is spaced from the ring 6 by sleeves 12, and is secured to said ring by screws 13 passing through the sleeves. A space exists between the ring 5 and both of the end plates, and coil springs 14 are located in these spaces, one end of said springs being anchored at 15 to the ring 5 while the other ends of said springs are hooked over headed studs 16 on the ends of the roller 8. The springs thus exert their tension to retain the roller at the narrow end of the recess 7.

When the shaft is turned in the direction to crank the motor the roller has a tendency to move to the wide end of the recess 7 and thus interferes in no manner with the cranking operation. When however, the motor back-fires, the roller, in moving to the narrow end of the recess 7 tightly'locks the shaft and crank against retrograde rotation, thus preventing injury to the person cranking the machine.
The device is of simple and inexpensive nature, yet will be highly efiicient, reliable and in every way desirable. Since excellent results are obtained from the details disclosed they are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed considerable latitude is allowed for making such minor changes as occasion may dictate.
