The subject oi' this invention is a puppet valve ivherein a. reciprocating valve and. rotary cani are cooperatively associated, and the objects of the invention are, first, to
4lessen the load upon the cani shaft caused by thecam-'closing spring, second, to provide means for positively opening and clos ing the valve, third, to provide means for causing a sudden opening' of the valve and a gradual closure, fourth, to provide shock absorbing means in the valve actuating mechanism, fifth, to provide means for positively seating the valve and resilient means for retaining the valve, when seated, on its seat, sixth, `to provide resilient means for retaining a valve on its seat, and means for gradually releasing the resilient means and positively opening the valve, and seventh,
` to provide means for preventing the valve unseating on one side due to the actuating stem being out of alinement.
With the foregoing and other objects in vievv which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides .in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and cl aimed, it beingunderstood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made Within the scope of What is claimed, Without departing V from the spirit of the invention.
One practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section,

The' stem 7 is further provided, adjacent its inner end, with dia-v inetrically opposed, longitudinal slots 10, through each of which extends an end of a pin 11, which is mounted ina transverse bore formed in the rod-9, near the end thereof. The lpin 11 hasa, slidingfit in the slots 10, and its extending ends rest Within a cup Washer 12, which is slidably mounted on the stem 7. Another cup Washer 13 engages the Washer 12 and is inverted to receive, Withinits cupped portion, one end of a coiled compression spring 14, which surrounds the stem 7 and has its other end seated in a cupped nut 15. flange portion of the cup nut 15 is provided with an opening 1G, to which is adapted the tongue of a lock Washer 17 As will be readily understood from the' foregoing, a yielding connection is formed bet-Ween the valve stem 7 and the cam rod 9, which permits the cam rod to move after the valve is seated. This movement of the cam rod with respect to the valve stem takes place after the seating of the valve and before the unseating thereof, and permits the valve to be seated Without shock, as Well as compensating for Wear of the valve and seat. The outer end of the cam rod 9 is angled to form a stub shaft 18, upon which turns a roller 19. Y
A cam 20 is provided on a cam shaft 2l, and secured to the cam shaft by means of a. bolt 22 are two registering sections. Each of these sections comprises, a collar portion 23, adapted to engage the cam shaft 21 and to be secured thereto by the bolt V22; a back plate 24 ;and a flange section 25. Fig. 5 illustrates a modification of the invention in which the cam is formed integral With the back plate 24 and the collar is bolted to the shaft 21', in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
The operation is as follows z-Referring particularly .to Fig. 2, the positionA shown 'isi that of complete opening of the valve. 4Considering the cam to be turning 'in the direction indicated by the'arrow, the valve will start closing as soon as the position shown is passed, and will continue to close until the point 28 is reached, at which point the valve is seated.
As soon as the cam has passed the point 28, the roller 19 will cease to Contact the cam 20, and will be engaged by the flange -y and, from the point 28 to 29, compression of the spring 14 takes place, the valve remaining on its seat. From 29 to 30 no movement of the cam rod takes place, the valve still remaining closed. From the'point to 31 the spring 14 is expanding, the valve still being held on its seat by the tension of the spring, and the roller 19 maintained in contact with the flange 25 by the same means. At the point 81, the spring 14 insana has completely expanded and the roller 19 is disengaged by the flange 25 and again engaged by the cam 20, the valve opening from this point to the starting point.
It will be seen that the valve is gradually and carefully seated, Without shock or jar. Because the roller 19 is not in contact With the ange during the seating of the valve, no lpull is exerted on the valve until it is completely seated and then such pull is cushioned by the spring 14. A quick and positive opening of the valve is also obtained by retaining the roller 19 in contact With the flange 25 and out of contact with the cam 20 until the point for admission is reached. This prevents any accidental opening, or leakage of the valve, due to irregularity of the cam surface.

A puppet valve, comprising a valve and its stem, a sleeve threaded on the stem, said sleeve provided With longitudinal slots,
Washers sliding on the sleeve, a nutthre'ad r ed on the free end of the sleeve, a coiled spring surrounding the sleeve and conined between the Washers and the nut, a cam rod having one end sliding in the sleeve and provided with an aperture, a pin passing through the aperture and the slots of the sleeve and resting on the uppermost Washer, a shaft, and a cam on the shaft and operatively engaging the cam rod.
