sashes and the sides of their respective. guideways to one side of the casing but the wedges must needs be shaped to suit the requirements of each individual sash and cannot be made in one size for all sashes. Wedges also are liable to be lost unless chained to a staple at one side of the casing which is unsightly and otherwise objectionable.
The present invention contemplates a simple device for accomplishing the purpose mentioned, one that is easily manipulated, cheaply manufactured and reliable in service, and a device which will be almost unnoticeable when mounted in operative position. It aims to provide a device which will not be lost once it has been mounted and is calculated to fill a long felt want not heretofore satisfied by any device ever placed upon the market as far as is known.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing being shown in working position in perspective in the single figure thereof.
In the drawings the counter-balanced upper and lower sashes 1 and 2 having midrails 3 and 4 and the side-rails 5 and 6, respectively, are slidably supported in guideways, one of which is indicated at 7.
On top of the mid-rail 4 of the lower sash, a lever indicated generally by the numeral 8 is mounted flatwise and in advance of the side rail 5 of the upper sash as shown. The lever 8 comprises a body portion with relatively inclined side edges 10 and 11 and having flanges 12 and 13 at its opposite ends, the flanges being disposed preferably perpendicular to the body portion. One of these flan es, 12, is. arranged eccentrically of each of the two holes 14 and 15, being preferably, but not necessaril formed on an arc whose center is intermedmte the holes, as indicated at 16. The flange 12 constitutes a cam. for shift- 'ing or separating the sashes laterally and jamming them against the'outside edges'of their guideways, but obviously. this flange may vbe'made'on other curves'than circular. While two holes 1415 are preferably provided in the body portion of the lever 8 so that the device may be applied to either side of the lower sash, one of them may obviously be dispensed with if desired. Or the device may be manufactured in pairs, rights and lofts each with a hole'but on relatively opposite sides of the center of curvature 16.
The device is constructed entirely of sheet metal, preferably sheet steel, and may be manufactured cheaply by cutting it from stock, flanging and punching in one operation. It is adapted to contact directly with the side rail of the upper sashand to be embedded in the wood thereof sufficiently to holdrin place but the flange 12 preferably should not cut or abrade the sash. It will be noticed that the manipulating end 13 of the lever 8 does not project appreciably beyond the front face of the lower sash when lower sash. The device may be arched slightly between the flanges 12 and 13 so that when it is turned to the dotted line position shown it will tend to stick in place.
It is of course adapted to jam and hold the sashes from rattling in any positions to which they may be moved, for ventilation for instance at night in a bed room.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. A device for use with upper and lower window sashes slidable in guideways in a casing and having midand siderails, com prising a one-piece sheet-metal lever provided with a hole and having a curved cam flange disposed eccentrically of said hole and at one of said. lever, the opposite free end of said lever affording a manipulat ing handle for turning the cam flange directly against one of the sashes and thereby holding both sashes against the sides of their guideways whereby rattling is prevented, and a fulcrum member adapted to enter said hole and to be anchored'to the mid-rail of one of the sashes adjacent a side-rail of the other sash.
2. In a device for jamming upper and lower sashes tight against the outer sides of their respective guideWa-ys, a flat onepiece sheet-metal lever having a body portion provided with a hole and With diverging sides, flanges at opposite ends of the body portion, said body portion being adapted to lie directly upon the top of thelower sash, one of said flanges being perpendicular to the body portion and being disposed cam-fashion with respect to said hole, and
being also adapted to bear directly against the side of the upper sash, in combination with a headed fulcrum member for retaining said sheet-metal lever in operative position on the lower sash in disengageable j amming relation With the upper sash.
3. An anti-rattling device for Window sashes comprising a lever having a body portion With a circular flange at one end and a manipulating finger piece at its other end, said body portion being provided with holes eccentric of said circular flange and disposed substantially equal distances from a perpendicular bisecto-r of the chord of the circular flange, and a fulcrum member for anchoring the lever through one of its holes to either side of a sash in front of the other sash. v c
