SPIRO DENIS GARBIS, OF CALCUTIA, INDIA.
TREJAEaURE-BOX AND THE LIKE WITH KEYLESS LOCK AND METAL SEAL.
LPaten'ted A12 12, 191% I Application filed January 8, 1916. Serial No. 71,002.
To all whom it may (907168?"71."
Be it known that I, Srrno Dams Gainers, a citizen of the Kingdom of Greece, residing in the city of Calcutta, British India. and having a postal address at 1T Crooked .l-ane. in the city of Calcutta aforesaid, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Treasure-Boxes ant the like with Keyless Locks and Metal Seals, oil which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of a,treasure box or the like with a sliding and removable lid or cover. and its objects are to provide a box so strengthened as to enable it to withstand rough usagc. with meansfor securing the lid or cover in its closed position without the use of a key, and means for attaching a metal or other seal to prevent, or at least to indicate, unauthorized tampering with the said securing means.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings:
Figure 1 is a broken sectional elevation of the box taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of ig. 2,
Fig. 2 is a-broken plan of the sliding lid or cover,
Fig. 3 is a part section through the lid on an enlarged scale showing the securing and sealing means.
The box a and its sliding cover a is preferably constructed of wood and is strengtlr eued by metal bands 3) and I) surrounding the box inside and outside, the corresponding inner and outer bands being riveted to each other through the material of which the box is constructed. I
The mouth of the box is strengthened by angle-iron pieces riveted to the inside on the four sides, the piece 0 at the side from which the cover-slides in and out being arranged in a plane slightly lower than the ren'iainiingthree pieces 0, to permit of the edges of the flat iron strips (Z, which are riveted to the inside of the cover on three sides, to slide above the horizontal member of the angleiron 0 and under the horizontal members of the angle-irons c. The strips d have wooden distance pieces d between them and the cover, the outer edges of the said strips projecting slightly beyond the said distance pieces to enable them to slide under the horizontal members of the angle-irons 0'.-
In the covcra' is provided a suitable opening to receive .l recessed and handed metal disk (1 placed therein from below and arranged at such a distance from the front edge oi the cover that a screw 7 passing througrl a hole in the center of the disk and thri'iugh a nut 9. projects below the lower surface of the cover and against the edge of the horizontal member of the angle-iron 0 so as to prevent withdrawal of the cover when placed in posit-ion and the screw screwed home. The disk 6 and nut g are held in position on the cover by a wood strip 2, extending across the width of the cover and riveted thereto. The nut g is located in a recess in strip ti and the screw 7' passes through said strip. The cover a is provided with thumb holes 1' to enable it to be withdrawn after the screw has been raised.
After the cover a. has been slid into position and the screw screwed down, an inverted cupshaped metal disk or seal 7' (see l l) is placed in the recess of the disk 1: and. being flattened and expanded as shown in Fig. 3 by means of a suitable punch or die. the circumferential edge of the said seal takes into an under-cut. groove formed around the bottom of the recess in the disk c and its removal therefrom without destruction is thereby prevented. The said recess is made of such a depth that the surrounding wall 6' acts as a guide for the punch or die used in flattening the seal j.
To prevent the possibility of a seal being applied without the screw fbeing in place, the end of the screw upset, or the last few threads may be burred down, so as to prevent the screw from being entirely withdrawn through the nut {1.
As an additional precaution against tampering and to further strengthen the cover, two or more screws such as f and 7' may be provided, with or without the sealing means described with reference to the screw 7".
What I claim is:
In a box fastener adapted to be used on a box having a sliding lid; a recessed and cxteriorly flanged metal disk fitted in a corresponding recess in the lid and provided. on the inner side of its wall with an undercut groove; said disk also having a central opening; a screw to hold said disk in place and to also lock the lid when closed. said screw extending through and projecting below the lid and having a hem arranged in the central opening of the disk, and an in verted. cup-shaped metal disk arranged ta be placed in the recess of the disk, 0 cover 5 the head of the screw and to be flattened to bring its circumferential @ige into engage 6H1 seaii undercut gwove,
In testimony whereof 1 him: slgned Zhis Witspecificatian' in the presence in HENRY VINCENT WILLIAMS VYVYAN H. F. JAMES.
