To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jesse F. Vnn'r, citizen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of Phillips and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a pertains to make and use the same.
y invention has for its ob ect to provide an extremely simple, inexpensive, easily attached, and highly ellicient, self-closing trap for use either in drain pipes or at the juncture of such pipes with the catch basins of sewage systems, to prevent obnoxious gases from rising to the surface through such pipes; and with the foregoin in view the invention resides in the novel eatures of construction and unique association of arts hereinafter fully described and claime the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application.
Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of a sewer trap constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view;
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views showing two ways in which the trap may be installed.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a disk of sheet metal adapted to be disposed at one end of a sewer or drain pipe, either between two sections 2 of such pipe as seen in Fig. 4, or at the end of the pipe as illustrated in Fi 5. The plate 1 is held in place by an arc ed bar 3 located at one side thereof and attached to said plate by L-shaped resilient brackets 10, one end of said brackets being secured to the plate while the other ends thereof are attached to the bar 3. The arched bar 3 is receivable in the end of one of the pipe sections 2 and the two ends of said bar are adapted to be forced apart by a spreader rod or the like 11, into frictional engagement with the ipe, and if desired, the periphery of said ar may be provided with prongs 12 to revent any possible slippage. One end 0 bar 3 is provided with a socket 13 in which a head 14 on one end of the spreader rod 11 is swiveled, while at 15 the other end of said rod is loosely threaded in a head 16 with which the other end of the bar is provided. By means of a polysided enlargement 17 on the rod 11, said rod may be turned to either force the ends of the bar 3 outwardly or inwardly to respectively secure the device in place or remove the same. As the bar 3 is thus sprung, the resilient brackets 10 yield in a manner which will be obvious.
The disk 1 is provided with a suitably shaped opening 18 and with a spout 19 BX- tending therefrom and positioned at the opposite side of the disk from the bar 3, the outer end of said spout being disposed in an inclined plane as seen at 20 to be closed by a verticall swinging flap valve 21. Valve 21 may be hinged at its upper end in any preferred manner, but knuckles 22 are by preference formed on said valve and p ate to receive a suitable pintle, the joint thus formed being suiiiciently loose to allow the sewage flowing through the drain or sewer to open the valve 21 while allowin said valve to close by gravity after sucfi sewage has passed.
The device is easily and inex ensively manufactured, and applied quickly and easily as seen in Figs. 4 and 5, or otherwise if desired; and when in use the trap will serve to prevent any undesirable gases from returning to the surface throu h the sewer. Another advantage is that t e improved trap does not cause the trouble and inconvenience resulting from gas traps now in use particularl in freezing weather.
ince probab the best results are obtained from the details shown and described, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, considerable latitude is allowed for making numerous minor changes.
What is claimed 1s:
1. A sewer tra including a valve carrying plate, an arc ed bar at one side of said plate and attached thereto for rece tion in one end of a sewer pipe, and means or forcing the ends of said arched bar apart for engagement with the ipe.
2. A sewer tra inc uding a valve carrying plate, an arc ed bar at one side of said plate for reception in one end of a sewer pipe, resilient L-shaped brackets secured at one end to said plate and at their other ends to said arched bar, and means for forcing the ends of said bar apart for engagement with the pipe.
3. A sewer trap including a valve carrying plate, an arched bar at one side of said plate and attached thereto for reception in one end of a sewer pi e, one end of said bar having a socket an the other end having a threaded opening, and a s reader rod I extending between the ends of t e bar with one end swiveled in said socket and its other end threaded in said opening.
s. A sewer trap comprising a disk for disposition at one end of a sewer pipe, said plate having an opening for communication with the pipe, an arched bar at one side of said disk and attached thereto for reception in the end of the pipe, means for forcing the ends of said arched bar apart for my hand.
