VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented -Aug. 29, 191.6.
Application filed Novemloei` 17, 1914. Serial No. 872,645.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S'IEEG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in valves and more particularly to valves for use in drains for cellars and the like.
.in object of the invention is the provision of a valve for the purpose specified, which will prevent water or the like from Howing backward into the said cellar after once passing through the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device such as described, including a valve and valve casing designed to deflect the water or the like, passing therethrough toward one side thereof, thereby preventing the same from moistening the operating parts thereof, and preventing rusting.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a valve such as described, including a casing having a removable mouthpiece, which supports a valve which is weighted in such manner that the valve will be normally retained in closed position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device such as described, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eilicient'in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the ligure is a vertical sec tional view of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, by suitable characters of reference, to indicate the various parts, the numeral 1 denotes a casing which is of substantially cylindrical formation, having the opposite ends thereof reinforced as shown at 3 and 4. The upper end of the casing is provided with threaded sockets 5, for the reception of the fastening elements 6, which retain the cap 7 in position upon the upper end of the casing 2. This cap or plate 7 has suitable openings 8 formed therein so that water 01 the like can pass into the casing 2, which is preferably embedded in the floor of a cellar or the like for draining purposes.
A. mouth piece is shown at 9, and is of a substantially conical formation, having one side thereof 9"L disposed at a slightly less incline than the opposite side thereof 9b. The mouth piece 9 has a flange 10 formed at the major end thereof which is clamped between the upper end of the casing 2 and the cap or plate 7 being held in such position by the fastenings 6.
A projection 11 is formed upon the eX- terior of the side 9b, and has pivoted thereto as at 12, a lever 13, the lower end of which is pivotally secured as at 14, to a disk valve 15. The opposite end of the lever is enlarged as at 16, providing a weight whereby the valve will be normally forced against the lower open end of the mouth piece for the purpose of closing the same and prevent water or the like from backing into the mouth piece and flowing out through the openings 8. The weight of the water will however, cause the depression of the valve and permit any water collecting in the mouth piece to iow from the same and out through the drain pipe (not shown) in the drawing.
From the foregoing it will be manifest that a valve for the purposes specified is provided, which will fulfil all the necessary requirements of such a device, it being understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specic details of construction ean be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
IIaving thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a 4valve such as described, a substantially cylindrical casing, a funnel shaped member disposed within the Casing and having its axis slanting toward one side of said easing, a pivoted valve normally closing the lower end of the funnel shaped member, the pivot point of said valve being disposed between the casing and the side of the funnel shaped member opposite to that direction to which the said funnel shaped member points, and Out of the path of water flowing out through said funnel shaped member, and In testimony whereof I aiiix my sign atui'e said .Valve adapted to form a continuation in presence of tWo Witnesses. of said side of the funnel shaped member to which the same is pivoted, when the Valve WILLIAM STLEG' is opened, to direct Water flowing from said Witnesses:
