To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD Kooi-r, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county 01 Cochise and Territory oi Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatically-Operated Valves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in automatically operated ball valves.
One object of the invention is to provide a valve of this character adapted to be closed and held in a closed position by the force of the water engaging the same.
Another object is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of fluid operated valve opening mechanism whereby the valve will be automatically opened when the water is drawn from the tank in which the valve is arranged.
A further object is to provide a valve of this character which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a tank showing the application of my improved valve; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fi 3 is a detail cross sectional view through the discharge end of the valve casingv showing the construction of the valve lifting plunger; Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the valve catch. Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a water inlet pipe which is here shown as having one end secured in the bottom of a tank 2. The upper or inner end of the pipe 1 is curved downwardly in semi-circular form and terminates in an enlarged valve casing 3 having a reduced threaded lower end t on which is adapted to be screwed a cap 5, said cap having on its lower side a depending boss 6 in which is formed a water discharging passage 7.

in the form of a disk which is preferably constructed of rubber or similar composition or which may be formed of any suitable material. The disk 8 is provided with a centrally disposed aperture 9 which is disposed in line with and forms a continuation of the water discharge passage 7 whereby said passage is connected with the interior of the valve casing 3. Arranged in the casing 3 above the disk 8 is a wire valve cage 10 comprising upper and lower rings 11 to which are connected the upper and lower ends of a series of vertically disposed wire rods 12. The ends of the rods 12 are bent around the ribs and have their extremities projecting radially from the rings to form spacing lugs 13 which engage the inner sides or walls of the valve casing 3 as'shown. The lugs 13 space the cage from the sides oi the casing 3 and hold said cage in the center of the casing. Arranged in the valve cage 12 is a ball valve 1% which is normally adapted to engage the seat formed by the upper edges of the opening 9 in the disk 8 and thereby close the water discharge passage 7. The valve 14: drops by gravity and is guided by the cage 10 into engagement with its seat and is firmly held in close engagement therewith by the pressure of the water entering the valve casing .through the inlet pipe 1.
Tn order to automatically open the valve when the water is drawn from the tank to permit the latter to refill I provide a float operated valve opening mechanism comprising a pair of vertically disposed supporting rods 15 one of which is pivotally connected at its upper end to a lug 16 formed on one side of the valve casing 3. The upper end of the opposite rod 15 is pivotally connected to the inner end of an operating lever 17 which is pivotally connected to a bearing stud 18 arranged on one side of the inlet pipe 1 as shown. On the outer end of the lever 17 is adapted to be arranged float 17 which may be of any suitable construction. The lower ends of the rods 15 are pivotally connected together by a cross bar 19 to which is pivotally connected the lower end of a valve engaging plunger 20. The plunger 20 is preferably cross shape in transverse section and is loosely engaged with the water discharging passage 7 in the boss 6 of the cap 5 whereby when the water is drawn from the tank and the float thus lowers, said float will rock the lever 17 thus causing the latter to pull upwardly on the supporting rod 15 connected to its inner end thus lifting the cross bar 19 and projecting the plunger 20 upwardly through the passage 7 and into engagement with the valve thereby lifting the latter from its seat and holding the same in an open position. lVhen the valve is thus opened the water is permitted to flow through the inlet pipe and into the tank whereupon the float will again be raised thus rocking the lever 17 in the opposite direction which will gradually lower or retract the plunger 20 and permit the valveto drop or be forced back into engagement with its seat by the pressure of the water in the valve.
From the foregoing description taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended. claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A valve of the character described comprising a water inlet pipe having a. downturned end formed with a valve casing, a removable cap on the lower end of said casing, said cap having a discharge passage, a flexible valve seat arranged in said cap and clamped by the same against the bottom of said casing, a ball-valve to engage said seat, a plunger supporting-bar arranged below said cap, a plunger pivotally connected to said bar and adapted to project upwardly through the discharge passage in the cap Copies of this patent may be obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
and to unseat said ball-valve, a supporting rod pivotally connected at its upper end to said casing and at its lower end to one end of the plunger supporting bar, an operating rod pivotally connected to the opposite end of said bar, and a pivotally mounted float operated lever pivotally connected to the upper end of said operating rod, whereby the valve is automatically opened to permit the discharge of water through said valve easing.
2. A valve of the character described comprising a water inlet pipe having a curved downwardly projecting inner end, a valve seat formed on said inner end, a cap adapted to be screwed into engagement with said casing, said cap having a discharge passage, a flexible valve seat arranged in said cap, a ball valve adapted to engage said seat, a plunger supporting bar arranged below said cap, a. plunger pivotally connected to said bar and adapted to project up through the aperture in the cap, said plunger being cross shaped in transverse section, a supporting rod pivotally connected at one end to said casing and at its opposite end to one end of the plunger supporting bar, an operating rod pivotally connected to the opposite end of said bar and a pivotally mounted float operated lever pivotally connected to the upper end of said operating rod whereby the valve is automatically opened to permit the discharge of water through said valve casing.
