Be it known that I,, -FRANoIs,. ARTHUR Fumes, a subject-of the King of England,

residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Pens,1of which the following is specification.

This invention relates to duplex pens, that is to say duplexwritinginstruments whether pens, pencils, or styles of any kind, in which one pen is so carriedupon the other as to beguided to slide relatively to the other and so that one Writing point traces a line of writing above that traced by the otherpoint. r

According to the present invention, a duplex pen of the type defined and having relatively slidable pens, is characterized by an operative connection between the two pens such that upward thrust of the one produces a downward thrust of the other relatively to the guiding element. The object of this is to cause the pressure of one pen upon the paper to determine the 1nag= nitude of the pressure of the other, 1rre spective of difference of level in the writing surfaces.

The said means connecting the two pens conveniently takes the form of a rocking lever carried by the guiding element and having pivotal engagement at one end with one pen and at the other end with the other pen.

The present invention is further to be ascertained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation in part section of one construction;

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified construction;

Fig. 3 is an elevation in part section, and

Fig. 4 a plan of a device to receive the record made by one of the writing points.

In the construction shown in Fig. 1, pens A B are provided each with a tubular sheath A B respectively wherein the corresponding pen is mounted to slide freely, but without shake, in the direction of its length, and the two sheaths are connected by a clip C embracing the two sheaths.

Upon the body of each pen is a small lug, these being lettered A and B respectively, and to these lugs are pivoted the ends of a telescopic link D. The two portions of the link are slotted where they overlap one another, and at this part they engage a-pivot- Specification of Iietters Patent.

clip C connects the two sheaths A and B and provides for the link a pivotal axis at right-angles to the sliding movements of the pens in their sheaths.

In further movements the pressure of one pen upon its writing surface is transmitted through the link to the other pen so that substantial equality of pressure on the two writing points is automatically maintained.

In an alternative construction shown in Fig. 2, a one-piece link E is employed pivoted upon a fixed pivot-pin E carried in the clip C. The ends of the link are, however, slotted at E and one end engages a pivotpin A on one pen while the other end engages a pivot-pin B on the other pen. The action of this construction is the same as that of the other but the construction is slightly more simple.

A convenient means of presenting a record strip to the pen is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. In this device, a boX-like portion F incloses a roll of paper-strip G mounted on a spindle F and a second spindle F is provided, hereinafter called the draw-off spindle intended to receive the record when made. The spindle F is operated by a thumb-lever I-I through a ratchet-wheel and spring-pawl H H and the paper is passed through a slot F in the bottom of the box I Patented Aug. 5,1919. . Copies of this patent may be obtained for over a lip F projecting rigidly from the front of the box. From-this lip the paper is returned into the box through a slot in its front and passes on to the draw-ofi' spindle H guide-rolls J are provided where required. Any convenient be adopted enabling the boX to be opened for the insertion and withdrawal of the paper. In use, the box is held above the pen so that the writing point B makes a record on the paper above the lip F and when the paper here presented is sufliciently covered with record, corresponding with the record made with the pen A upon its writing surface, the strip of paper from G is moved by operation of the thumb-lever H.

The sheaths A 13 together with the clip 0 constitute what is herein described as the guiding element for the pens. Moreover, the term rocking lever is employed to denote a lever pivoted to rock about a point between its two efiective ends.

It is to be understood that it is within the scope of this invention to provide any means for so interconnecting the pens each slid ing within its guiding element that as a thrust is applied to the one tending to slide it in its guide, the other is thereby automatically thrust in the opposite direction. Furthermore, it may, in some cases, be desirable to provide unequal leverage between the construction may pens and this may readily be accomplished by suitably locating the pivot-pins D E or, if some other construction be employed, by

- modifying it accordingly.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

l. The combination with a clip, of a pair of parallel sheaths secured to said clip, a pair of writing members mounted in said sheaths, respectively, and having their writing points projecting therefrom, and a lever pivoted in said clip between said writing members and having its opposite .rms engaging said writing members whereby the upward pressure 011 one writing point is caused to exert a downward pressure on the adjacent writing point or vice versa, substantially as described.

'2. The combination with a clip, of a pair of parallelsheaths secured to said clip, a pair of writing members mounted in said sheaths, respectively, and having their writing points projecting therefrom, and a telescopic rocking lever pivotally supported upon the said clip, and having pivotal engagement at one of its ends with one of said members, and at the other end with the other of said members, substantially as described.
