Be it known that I,DANIEL J. CRO LEY,

J12, a citizen of the United States,residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented. eer-*- tain new and useful Improvements in Plani-' graphs, of whichthe following is a specification.

This invention relates to instruments of the planigraph type, whereby pictures, designs and other matter may be copied and at the same time have their dimensions varied so as to present a distorted appearance while having the same general character of outline, thus a picture may be elongated or widened as desired.

The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention I'GIEQIQDOB characters.

The base 1 may consist of a board of any relative dimensions and is preferably oblong in form. A fixedarm 2'is secured at its outer end to an end portion of the base 1 and is spaced from the latter a short distance by means of an interposed block 3. A longitudinal slot 4 is formed in the arm 2 and receives a fastening 5. A movable arm 6 is connected at one end with the fixed arm 2 so as to receive a pivotal and a longitudinal movement. The fasteningb serves as connecting means between the two arms 6 and 2. The movable arm 6 pivots on the fastening- 5 and the latter is adapted to slide on the. longitudinal slot 4. The fastening 5 preferably consists of a headed stud which is placed with its head resting on the base 1 and the stem extending through the longitudinal slot 1 and receiving a washer 7 and a pin 8. The slotted portion of the fixed" A tracing stylus 9 is mounted upon the movable arm Gintermediate the end of such arm.-A marking stylus 10 is mounted upon the outer end of the arm 6 and preferably vided upon the outer end of the arm 6 and serves a two-fold office of a grip and a holder for the stylus 10. The boss ll usually consists of a piece of cork secured to the arm 6 and having an opening therethrough to snugly receive the marking stylus 10 so as to hold said stylus in the required adjusted position.

A sheet 12 of paper or other suitable material may be secured to the upper side of the base 1 and is intended to receive the copy of the picture, design or other matter to be copied. The numeral 13 indicates the matter to be copied which is the picture of the upper portion of a man and said picture may be separate from the sheet 12. The numeral 14 designates a copy of the picture 13, the same being vertically elongated. By positioning the picture or model 13 diil'erently upon the base, the copy 1 1 will. appear diiierently, hence from the same model a number of different copies may be obtained. It is obvious that the position of the two members 9 and 10 may be changed, that is, the stylus 9 may be utilized as the marker and the stylus 10 as the tracer, thereby adding variety. In the operation of the instrument the model 13 is traced by means of the stylus 9 and the stylus 10 makes a copy of the model,- as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1, the pivotal and longitudinal movements of the arm 6 providing for the various movements of the stylus 9 so that every portion of the model may be traced.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope-of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An instrument of the character specified, comprising a base, an arm secured to the base and provided with a longitudinal slot and a movable arm having pivotal and slidable connection with the fixed arm and consists of'a lead pencil.- A boss 11 isproprovided at difi'erent points in its length with marking and tracing styli.

2. In an instrument of the character set forth, a fixed arm, a movable arm having pivotal and slidable connection with the pivoted arm and provided With a boss which is apertured and serves the two-fold ofiice of a finger grip and a holder, and a stylus mounted in the said boss.

3. An instrument of the character set forth, comprising a base, a longitudinally slotted arm secured at one end to the base and spaced a distance therefrom, a movable arm, a fastening supported on the base and passing through the slotted arm and connecting the movable arm thereto and tracing and marklng styli mounted upon the movable arm.
