Specification ofietters Patent. A11 5, 1919.
Application filed February 21, 1918. Serial No. 218,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Sour.- rrronr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bedside-Tables, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to bedside tables and an object of my improvements is to provide a simple and strong construction that may be easily adjusted to place or stowed compactly out of the way and that may be cheaply made.
I accomplish this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a bed with an apparatus embodying my invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the apparatus separate from the bed showing the supporting parts folded into position for stowlng.
Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe parts ready to be adjusted to their position for use.
Fig. L is a detail section on the line D-D Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line E-E Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a section on the line FF Fig. 2.
a represents the bed of which a is a side piece. a is the bedpost at a head corner of the bed. 6 is a clamp adapted to be secured upon the bedpost a The clamp b is provided with a socket part or piece 6 which may have therein a ferrule 5 0 is the supporting table or platen.
d is a supporting arm, or bracket, hinged at P so as to turn about an axis in the plane of said arm and parallel and adjacent to one of the sides of the table or platen. f is the plate supporting the hinge 7. This plate is secured to the table 0. d is a pintle on the outer end of the arm 0? extending vertically and adapted to fit in the socket 6 or ferrule 6 and turn therein.
e is a second arm, or bracket, provided at. its outer end with a securing eye e and at its inner end with a vertical upwardly ex tending pintle e placed upon the socket b axially in line therewith and the pintle d is placed therethrough and into the socket b and ferrule 6 as shown in Fig. 6.
Thus the outer ends of both arms are secured and pivoted.
a: is a set screw by which the pintle 0Z may be clamped to an. adjusted position.
9 is a socket piece secured to the platen or table 0 at the under surface thereof and having a socket g therein adapted to receive and fixedly hold the pintle e 3/ is a set screw extending through the wall of the socket g and c is an indentation in the side of the pintle 6 adapted to receive the end of the set screw to fix the arm 6 in one position. The method of using and adjusting the above device is as follows:
The clamp 12 is fixed to the proper position upon the post with the socket b at the outside of said post. The securing eye 6 of the arm 6 is then placed over the socket and the pintle (Z of the arm 0! is pressed through said securing eye and into the socket. The arm 6 may be turned into the plane of the arm at and both arms turned around the hinge or pivot f to lie flat against the side of the table o-as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Then the table may be turned around to the end of the bed as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The end of the arm 61 next to the table 0 is provided with a guard plate h (Fig. 3) to accurately limit the relative position of the arm e when it is turned to its stowing position.
To adjust the table into position for use the platen is turned to its horizontal position or a little elevated therefrom.
The arm e is turned outward as shown in Fig.2 until the pintle 6 comes below the socket 9 the table is then allowed to turn about the pivot 7 until the pintle e engages in said socket thus holding the platen 0 firmly in its adjusted position. It may be more firmly secured by setting up the screws :1 and m.
What I claim is:
The combination of a platen, an arm pivoted thereto, a fixed socket, the other end of said arm having a pintle adapted to engage The securing eye 6 is.
in said socket, a second arm, a securing eye at one end of said second arm, the pintle of said first named arm passing. through said eye and into said socket, a socketon the, underside of said platen, the other end of said second arm being adapted to engage in said last-named socket, the pivotal movement of said platen being adapted to bring said last-named socket into engagement With said second arm. 10
WILLIAM J. SCULTHORP.
