To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ERNEST Sro. Boo'ri-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon Heights, in the county ofMuskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supportin Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in supporting devices and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which is adapted to be secured to a ladder or the like for supporting a container such as a bucket or can employed by painters.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby it may be readily and conveniently clamped in applied position and which may be employed with facility in connection with a container provided with a bail or may be engaged directly with the container.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved supporting device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a supporting device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position; and

Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings M denotes a substantially U-shaped member adapted to straddle the stile S of a ladder and threaded through the free end portions of one of the arms of the member M is a clamping screw 1 whereby the member M may be effectively held to the stile S. In swivel engagement the second arm 2 of the member M is a rod 3 extending outwardly of the member and extending in the same general direction as the intermediate portion 4 of the member M.

The outer end portion of the rod 3 is readily secured to the outer end portion of the arm 6 of a 'secondsubstantially U-shaped member A materially less than the size of the member'M. The member A is adapted to straddle the top marginal portion of the container or can of the type generally employed in connection with paint and wherein is an inwardly directed lid flange. The second arm 7 0f the member A has its inner end portion offset to aflord a shoulder 8 to underlie the lid flange of the can while the inner end portion of the first arm 6 has threaded therethrough a clamping screw 9 adapted to engage the outer face of the can. It will be understood, however, that the member A is of such shape as to readily receive between the arms 6 and 7 thereof the bail of a can or pail of a conventional type.

By having the rod 3 in swivel engagement with the member M it will be selfevident that the container will be maintained in substantially a vertical position irrespective of the inclination of the stile S with which the member M is engaged.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a supporting device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A supporting device of the class described, comprising a substantially U-shaped member, an outwardly disposed rod secured at one extremity to an outer extremity of an arm of the U-shaped member and substantially perpendicularly thereto, the rod and arms of the U-shaped member being arranged in the same plane longitudinally. of the rod, anchoring means, the opposite end portion of the rod being in swivel engagement with said anchoring means, and a member threaded through said first named arm of the U-shaped member and 'eoacting with the second arm of said U-shaped memher.

A supporting device of the class described, comprising a substantially U-shaped member, an outwardly disposed rod secured at one extremity to an outer extremity of an arm of the Ushapedmember and substantially perpendicularly thereto, the rod and arms of the U-shaped member being arranged in the same plane longitudinally of the rod, anchoring means, the opposite end portion of the rod being in swivel engagement With said anchoring means, and a member threaded through said first named armof Gopies'of this patent may be obtained for fiv'e cents each, by addressing the the U-shaped member and coacting with the second arm of said U-shaped member, said second named arm having its inner end portion outwardly ofi'set to afford a shoulder extending transversely of the inner face of said second arm, the threaded member being substantially diametrically opposite to the shoulder.
