This invention relates to improvements in sliding covers for receptacles containing paste-like substances which are forced from the tubes in any suitable manner.

One object of the invention is to provide a cover having a sliding engagement with the tube of the receptacle and having a beveled end adapted to co-act with the outer edge of the discharge opening to cleanly cut off the material when a suiiicient quantity of the same has been forced from the tube and the cover closed.

Another object is to provide-a cover of this character having means whereby the same may be conveniently manipulated by the thumb or finger of the hand holding the receptacle.. 'y l/Vith the foregoing and other objectsin view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as willbe more fully described and claimed.

My improved cover is intended to be applied to any suitable form of receptacle adapted to contain a semi-fluid .or pastelike material which is forced through -a discharge openingN in the 'tube by approlpriate means. ln the present instance the cover is shown as being applied to a collapsible tube l the upper end of whlch preferably tapers on two opposite sides toward a flat cover receiving seat 2 extending across the ridge or apex of said upper end, and at one end of which seat is formed a discharge opening 3 which is preferably of rectangular shape as shown. On the opposite side edges of the recess 2 are formed cover retaining and guiding ribs or flanges 4, the inner edges of which are undercut to form between the flanges a dove tail shaped passage.

Slidably mounted on the seat 2 and in the passage formed by the flanges 4 is a flat cover plate 5 the side edges of which are beveled or formed at an angle to fit and slidably eng e the undercut edges of lthe flanges 4 w erebfy the cover plate is held in sliding engagement with its seat. By the location of the guide flanges L the delivery end of the collapsible tube l is also strengthened and, therefore, the formation of said discharge end is retained by the addition and employment ofthe cover 5.

It will also be noted that by the employment of the guide flanges 4 the elongated discharge opening in the tube is properly proportioned in order to cause the tooth or other brush to be properly applied when it is desired to use the powder or other material contained within the tube upon the brush. The inner-end of the coverplate adjacent to the discharge opening in the seat 2 is beveled or rounded off to form a sharp lower cutting edge adapted to co-act with the edges of the discharge opening in the seat to cleanly cut off the protruding part of the material forced from the tube. By thus cutting oli' the material the mouth or ,discharge end of the receptacle will be kept clean and no material will be wasted.

0n the outer end of the cover is formed a depending thumb piece or lip 6 which is adapted to engage the end of the seat or side of the top when the cover is pushed to a closed position thereby limiting the closing movement of the cover.

0n the seat 2 adjacent to Aone side thereoi and at the opposite end from the discharge opening 3 is a pin 7 which projects upwardly through a notch 8 formed by'cutting away the adjacent edge of the cover whereby the opening movement of the cover is limited and the latter thus prevented from being drawn entirely out of engagement with the seat. rlhe upper surface of the cover adjacent to the outer end thereof opmaterials such as tooth cleaning pastes, ad-

When the desired quantity of such material has been forced from the discharge opening in the tube the protruding portion of the material may be cleanly the position of the material in the tube so that none of the material will remain or accumulate on the outer surface of the discharge end of the tube to collect dust or foreign matter or attract flies, thus providing a cover for receptacles of the character described which will keep the same in a clean and sanitary condition.

By construction and arranging the cover as herein shown and described it will be 'seen that the same may be readily operated yby the thumb or finger of the hand in which the tube is held, thus leaving the other hand free to be used in any other capacity.l

From the foregoing descriptlon taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Having thus particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,

terminating in' an abrupt shoulder so thatv the cutaway portion moves past said pin and the shoulder-engages it when the plate is retracted, the inner end of the plate being formed with a sharp edge to pass across said orifice and the outer end with a downturned lip adapted to engage against the end of the seat when the inner end of the plate has closed the orifice, and serrations on the upper face of the lplate near its outer end rising above said flanges, all as and for the purpose set forth.
