Description

Feb. 6, 1934. w HERRICK 1,945,638
CAP FOR PASTE TUBES Filed June 19, 1935 Inventor W. 7 Herrick Patented Feb. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cap for paste tubes and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby,- by the turning of a rotary plug in a cylindrical part of the cap, an opening in the cap can be easily and quickly opened and closed and when closed, the contents of the tube are prevented from being acted on by air.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for cutting ofi the contents close to the mouth of the opening, as the plug is moved to closed position, so that the exterior parts of the device are kept clean and free of the ma terial.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of the upper part of the tube, showing the invention in use thereon.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
As shown in these views, the cap A includes a cylindrical part 1 which is internally screw threaded to flt the screw threaded neck of the tube B, with a neck 2 rising from the part 1 and a horizontally arranged cylinder 3 is formed on the neck. This cylinder has both ends open and the top part is cut away at its center to form the arcuate opening 4. Que end of the cylinder has an arcuate extension 5, the ends of which form stop shoulders. A plug 6 passes through the cylinder and has a bore 7 passing laterally therethrough and a headed screw 8 is threaded to one end of the plug and engages thecorre-- sponding end of the cylinder for holding the plug in place. A pin 9 extends laterally of the plug and contacts the other end of the cylinder and by engaging the shoulders formed by the projection 5,. this pin limits the turning movement of the plug. This end of the plug is formed with a disk 10 which provides a handle for the plug. A rod or wire 11 has its ends placed-in recesses in the walls of the opening 4 and extends across said opening close to the plug and acts as a cut-oil for the material passing through the bore of the plug.
It will thus be seen that when the plug is in one position with the pin 9 engaging oneoi the shoulders formed by the member 5, the bore 7 will be closed, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, and by turning the plug to its other postthe bore and as this is done, the mouth of the bore, passing over or under the rod 11, will cause said rod to cut oil the material so that the material will not collect in the opening 4 or smear the other parts of the device, so that the device may be kept clean and in a sanitary condition. When the bore is closed, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, the contents of the tube are protected against the action of the air.
The device can be turned easily and quickly by the thumb of the hand holding the tube, while the other hand holds the brush or the like.
After a tube as been emptied, the'device can be removed therefrom and placed on a new one.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed isz A cap for a paste or other tube comprising a neck portion internally threaded to receive the threaded neck of a tube and a horizontally arranged cylindrical portion open at both ends and having an arcuate slot in its outer part, said slot being of considerable length and having its end walls substantially in the same horizontal plane, one end of said cylindrical portion being extended to provide a pair of shoulders, a plug passing through the cylindricalpart, a pin carried by the plug for engaging the shoulders for limiting rotary movement of the plug, a handle on one end of the /plug, a screw threaded in the other end and engaging a portion ofthe cylindrical part for holding the plug in place, said plug having a lateral bore of considerably less cross sectional area than the length and width of the slot and a cutter wire having its ends secured in opposite side walls of the slot and extending in a direction substantially at right angles to the direction of rotation of the plug and contacting a part of the plug, said cutter wire being located to one side of the transverse center of the slot, said wire contacting the plug in advance of the bore therein when the plug is in a position with its bore in vertical and open position.
