To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLEs ALBERT CONN,.a citizen of Finland, residing at Anaconda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nozzles especially designed for use in pressure lines, such for instance as are commonly employed in conjunction with smelter works for blowing away the dirt collecting at the boiler tubes.
In its general construction the body of the device is so formed as to eliminate the necessity of bending of the hose line attached thereto, thus prolonging the life of the hose; and the valve of the nozzle is arranged and so constructed as to dispense with the use of gaskets, leakage being prevented by the long tapered seat and the action of the pressure medium against the valve member.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body portion of the device, one extremity 2 thereof being curved to extend at substantially a right angle to the main portion of the body, a hose line (not shown) being adapted for connection to this curved portion and in the use of the invention the part 2 constitutes a handle for manipulating the device. At the top the body is provided with a hollow portion 3 offset therefrom and communicating with the respective passages 4-4 of the main body. At one end this offset port-ion is provided with a screw plug closure member 5 while at the opposite end a turning plug or valve 6 is seated interiorly of said offset portion. The latter is reduced in cross section at the end in which the plug 6 is seated and said plug is tapered exteriorly to confirm to the interior wall of the reduced end aforesaid. The plug seats against a shoulder 7 and having in view the comparatively long seat formed by the valve 6 leakage of the pressure medium is practically impossible even though gaskets are not employed.
The plug is arranged longitudinally of the nozzle and is interiorly chambered in a longitudinal direction so that the pressure medium which is controlled by the rotation of the plug forces the plug against its seat. By virtue of this arrangement also the valve may be easily turned because the pressure when it is closed is distributed against the opposite walls. Furthermore, the provision of the shoulder 7 prevents the valve from sticking or wedging in its seat by reason of the tapered formation inasmuch as said shoulder limits the longitudinal movement of the turning plug. The extremity of said plug is provided with a reduced portion 8 upon which is detachably mounted the manipulating handle 9 secured by means of the nut 10. When the valve is opened the handle 9 lies close to the body of the nozzle as shown in Figs. 3 to 5 and when closed the handle is raised into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4. It is easy to manipulate said handle with the left hand while the nozzle is being manipulated by the right hand, grasping the handle portion 2, this quite desirably facilitating the use of the device with long hose lines to which it may be attached.
At the mouth of the nozzle I preferably provide a detachable nipple 11 screwed into the entrance of the nozzle and protecting the threads of the latter.
It will be apparentthat the assembly of the parts may be easily accomplished by the removal of the closure plug 5 which enables the introduction or removal of the turning plug 6. the handle 9 having been detached.
The material at the central portion of the nozzle is preferably bored and provided with an opening 12 for the purpose of lightening the device and also providing means for the introduction of a wire for the purpose of stringing a number of these nozzles together and hanging them away when not in use.
The nozzle hereinbefore described may be used not only for air pressure lines but for water or steam lines, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the inter! ti n appeartaina Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is A nozzle for pressure-lines comprising a body having a curved end portion for receiving a hose connection, said curved portion constituting a handle, said body having a hollow ofiset portionat the top of the same forming a plug receiving chamber to which the entrance through the body poi tion leads at right angles, said oflset portion having an interior-annular shoulder at one end forming a valve seat, a turning plug of tapered form mounted Within said offset chamber and. against the annular shoulder aforesaid, said plug having a projecting portion extending outwardly of the chamber and a handle removably mounted upon said extending portion, the other end of the plug terminating short of the entrance to the offset chamber hereinbefore mentioned and be ing open at this end to permit passage of fluidthrough the nozzle, said plug also having an outlet port communicating With the outlet passage of the nozzle, and a screw 13 lug closure for the end of the oifset chamber permitting introduction and removal of the turning'plug therein.
