Be it knowntht I, GEORGE H. Zonen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in'the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Blowpipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cutting blow pipes or torches, and has for'its primary object the provision bf an inexpensive, simple and efficient blowpipe structure, capable of employment in cutting operations, having the gas inlet passages securely sealed to prevent premature mixing of the gases and including a replaceable tip so constructed as to insure a proper relation by volume of combustible and oxidizing gases delivered to the heating jet discharge passages.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent, as it is better understood, by reference to the following specification, when read in connection with the accompan ing drawing, illustrating the pre- -ferred ein odunent thereof, in which Figure 1 is c longitudinal section through the head y and tipof a cutting blow-pipe or torch; Fig. 2 is a, transverse section through 'the head, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the ti v Iitllnnerous forms of blow-pipes have been heretofore designed involving many diii'erent structures, but so far as applicant is aware, all have been subject to one or more of such disadvantages as leakage and premature mixing of the gates, liability to backfiring and general expensiveness of construction, due to the number of parts employed and to intricacy'of operations necessary in manufacturing. The blow-pipe forming the subject matter of the present-application has been devised to overcome all of these numerous difficulties sind to provide a structure which embodies, with the utmost simplici-ty, all of the desirable `characteristics of an eflicient cutting blow-,pipe capable of long,r continued use to perform its desired function.
Referring to the drawing` 5 indicates a headl to which pipes 6, 7 and 8 are secured;
the pipes f and 7 beingr adapted to separately convey supplies of oxygen to'the head while the pipe. 8 .carries a, supply of cumbustible gas. Within the head 3, passages 9, 10 and 11 are provided communicutin respectively 'passage 18 and, at their inner ends, communicate with the channel 12 in the head,
when the tip is held in assembled relation with the head by a threaded nut 20. The inner end of the tip is provided with a conical recess conormin r to the conical surfaces 14, 15 and 16, and adiipted, when en raged therewith, to form gas-tight seals between the respective passages E), 10 and 11, and between he latter and thc wall of the head, to permi the passage of gas from the channel 13 tolthc channel 12 and provide a series of `grooves oi' depressions 21, which may be formed by a milling operation or by pressing, in the face of the conical seat, wt the inner end bf the ti As will be readillI understood, the oxygen supplied through the passage 9 is deliyered directly to the cutting jet discharge passage 18'of the tip. The combustion supporting olxygen is delivered from the passage 10 in t 1e the heating'` jet discharge passages 19. The. combustible gas is delivered from the passage 11 in the head to the channel 13, and thence through the grooves or depressions 2l to the channel 12. where it is. mixed with the combustion supportingr oxygen, before the latter enters the heating jet discharge passages i9. The result is u thorough and complete mixture of the heating gases before they are discharged from the tip.
Tips'having discharge passages of different sizes are norma-liv employed with the same head, the tips being interchangeable and replaceable by simply removing the nut 20. B v properly proportioning the grooves or depressions 21, any desired mixture of oxygen and combustible gas suitable to the head to the channel 1:2, and thence "to i 1size of the dischar passages 19, which are proportioned to tE: size of the discharge passage 18, may be provided for, and a proper mixture is always insured. The seals formed byengagement of the face-0f the conical recess in the inner end of the tip with the conical surfaces in the head, iiieures an absolutely gas-tight joint, o that premature mixing of the gases, or escape thereof, other than through the intended discharge passages, is prevented.
The structure is extremely simple, requiring a minimum number of manufacturing operations, as will be readily a )parent in inspection of the drawing. Tie only Wear which occurs in the normal use of the strucv ture is at the point of engagement ot' the nut 20 with the shoulder ot' the tip.A Wear, at this point, is, however, of no importance, since it doesl not affect the operation of the blow-pipe. Should thc tip be injured by misuse, it may b e readily replaced and the blow-pipe may thus be restored to its original condition.
Whilc the preferred embodiment of the. invention has been shown, it will be understood that various changes in the details of construction may be made, without depait ing from the principhI of the invention.
I claim:
1. 1n a device of the character described, the combination of a head having two passages for oxygen, one for combustible gas *and a projecting conical seat, a tip having a conical recess at its inner-end conforming to said seat and forming` therewith a gastiglit joint, a cutting jet discharge passage disposed in alinenient with one of the oxygen passages iii said head, a heating 'et discharge passage communicating with t e other oxygen passage in said head and a groove or depression in `the face of said recess, whereby combustible gas is conveyed to and mixed with the oxygen issuing from' saidV last mentioned oxygen passa e and means for holding said tip in assemv led relation with said head.
2. In a device of the character described, the combinatie-ii of a head having two. passages for oxidizing gas, one for comhusti ble gas and a projecting conical sealing surface, a tip having a 'conical surface conforming to said sealin surface and forin ing therewith a gas tig it joint, a cutting jet discharge passage communicating with one of the oxidizing gas passages, and a heating jet discharge passage communicating with the other oxidizing gas passage, and a groove or de ression in one of said surfaces whereby com Vustible gas isconveyed to and mixed with oxidizing gas before entering said heating jet discharge passage when said tip is held inassembled relation with said head. l

A device of the character described, comprising a. head having a seat, two passages for oxidizing gas and a passage for combustible gas terminating therein and a tip having a surface conforming t said seat and forming therewith a gas tig it joint, a cutting jet discharge passage comnumicating with one of the oxidizing gas passages in said head, a heating jet discharge passage and a groove or depression in said surface whereby combustible gas is conveyed to and mixed with oxidizing gas issuing from the other oxidizing gas passage in said head, said snrface cooperating with said seat beyond the ends of said groove to prevent the escape of gases when said tip is held in assembled relation withsaid head.
