ZoUC-K, a citizen of the United States. residing at Orange. in the countv of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blowpipes: and I do hereby declare the following to be a fiill, clear. and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains te make and use the saine.
This invention relates to blow pipes or torches. and has for its primary object the' provision of a simple blow pipe structure permitting the use oflinterchangeable tips capable of producing Haines of varying sizes and insuring a proper mixture of the oxidizing and combustible, gases without manipulation other than the selection and insertion of a tip of the desired size.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a blow pipe of the character described in which leakage and premature mixing of the gases is etfectivelv prevented.
Further objects and advantages of in v invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference is the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof. in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the head and tip of a blow pipe;

It is highlyv desirable that tips capable of producing flames of diierent sizes be usable in interchangeable relation with the head of the torch or blow pipe and thatV the proportioning of the mixture of combustible and oxidizing gases be controlled by the simple substitution of the desired ti Blow pipes have been constructed in w ich the gasesare primarily mixed well Within the discharge passage of the tip, the gases being admitted through separate 'inlets in the rear thereof. Such structures are subject to the disadvantage of incomplete mixing resulting in a variable and' unreliable tlame of low heating capacity.
My invention aims to overcome this and other disadvantages of blow pipes or torches as heretofore constructed by providing a mixing chamber well within the head to which more or less combustible gas is admitted, depending upon the dimensions of the particular tip assembled therewith. Such a structure insures proper mixing of t-he gases before they enter the discharge passage of the tip. Atthe same time the mixture is fully controlled for each tip Without manipulation other than the simple substitution of the desired tip.
Referring to the drawing, 5 indicates a head having passages 6 and 7 to which oxidizing and combustible gases are supplied through pipes 8 and 9 secured to the head. The head 5 is provided With a conical socket having an internally threaded cylindrical k extension. A conical plug or filler 10 having a threaded extension 11 is disposed within the socket and is provided with a mixing chamber 12 and a passage 13 communicating with the oxygen passage 6. The plug-or filler 10 has an annular channel 1iv communicating with the passage 7 for combustible gas and a plurality of ducts 15 leading from the channel 1i to the chamber 12. The ducts 15 are of different lengths and pierce the wall of the chamber 12 at varying distances from the rearward end thereof.
The plug or filler 10 is provided at its forward end with a conical socket and the tip 16 has a corresponding conical end 17 cooperating with said socket to form a gastight joint when the tip is held in assembled relation with the head by coupling 18. At .its inner end the tip carries a projecting tubular extension 19, the passage 20 of which is in alinement with the discharge passage 21 of the tip and with the passage 13 in the plug or filler 10. The diameter of the extension 19 is such that it closely fits the chamber 12 and as will be readily apparent upon inspection of the various figures of the drawing thel extension 19 is of varying length, depending upon the size of the tip. Thus in the smallest tip the extension 19 is longest and when the tip is assembled with the head the extension may cover all but one of the ducts 15 so that coinbustible gas reaches the chamber 12 and hence the tip 16 only through the exposed duct. The large tips have progressively shorter extensions 19 so that two or more ducts are exposed, permitting additional combustible gas to reach the chamber 12.
-In use the operator selects the tip best adapted to the Work in handvand secures it inthe head by means ofthe coupling 18. Leakage or premature mixing of the gases is e'ectually prevented by the engaging conical surfaces of the head, plug or filler and tip. A proper mixture of predetermined character is insured by the simple insertion of the tip, the extension 19 of which exposes one or more of the ducts 15. The gases meet in the chamber 12, are mixed and pass through the passage 20 tothe discharge passage 21 of the tip at the outer' end of which they are ignited and burn.
It will be readily appreciated from the foregoingv that I have perfected a blow pipe or torch having numerous advantages and that various changes may be made in` the form, arrangement and construction of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the forni hereinbefore discussed being merely the preferred embodiment thereof.
Claims:
1. A blow pipe comprising a head, having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a mixing chamber communicating i therewith and a removable tip having a discharge passage and means for controlling the flow of one of said gases to saidmixing chamber, said tip and head having respectively, cooperating conical sealing surfaces whereby escape of said gases other than through said discharge passages is prevented.
2. A blow pipe comprising a head, having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a mixing chamber, inlets `to said chamber from the respective passages, a removable tip having a discharge passage and means carried by saidtip for controlling the flow of one of said gases through the inlets therefor to said chamber. said tip and head having respectively, cooperating conical sealing surfaces whereby escape of said gases other than through said discharge passages is prevented.
3. A blow pipe comprising ahead, having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a mixing chamber,l an inlet to said chamber for the oxidizing gas, apliirality ot' inlets for combustible gas piercing the wall of said chamber at varying positions longitudinally thereof, and an interchangeable tip having an extension closely -iitting within said chamber and adapted tov prevent ingress of combustible gas through inlets covered by said extension.
4. A blow pipe comprising a head having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a mixing chamber, an inlet to said chamber for the oxidizing gas, a plurality of inlets for combustible gas piercing the wall of said chamber at varying positions longitudinally thereof and a reniovable tip having an extension closely fitting said chamber and adapted to prevent ingress of combustible gas through inlets covered bysaid extension. said tip having a conical sealing surface cooperating with a corresponding surface in said head to provide a gas-tight joint.
5. A blow pipe comprising a head having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases. a removable filler in said head having a mixing chamber, aninlet to said chamber for oxidizing gas. said inlet communicating u with said oxidizing gas passage, an annular channel between said head and filler coinmunicating with the combustible gas passage, a plurality of ducts .leading from said channel and piercing the wall of said chamber at varying positions longitudinally thereof and a tip having an'extension closely fitting within said chamber and yadapted to prevent ingress of combustible gas through ducts covered by said extension.
G. A blow pipe comprising a head having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a conical socket. a vremovable 'conical filler in said socket having a mixing ,chamber. communicating with said passages and a removable tip having means for controlling cthe flow of one of said gases to said mixing chamber and a discharge passage conununicating with said chamber, said tip and filler having respectively cooperating conical sealing surface whereby escape of said gases other than through said discharge passages is prevented.
7. A blow pipe comprising a head having passages for oxidizing and combustible gases and a conical socket, a removable conipal filler in said socket having a n'iixing chamber communicating with said passages and a conical socket, a tip having a conical projection' conforming to said socket and an extensioniadapted to enter said chamber to regulate the flow of one of said gases thereto and means for holding said tip and head in assembled relation.
