To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHAN RooDMAN, a citizen of Russia, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to bracelets, and more particularly to a type thereof known as flexible block bracelets composed of a sequence of units pivotally connected in a manner to impart to the structure the desired flexibility to permit it to conform to the forearm when being donned by the wearer.
Bracelets of the character to which my invention relates are ordinarily made in. precious metal, such as gold or platinum, the several units or blocks either being artistically finished as by chasing or'engraving, or by having jewels mounted therein, or made up of both characters of blocks.
\Vhen working in precious metals, it is not only necessary to secure excellence in the workmanship and finish of such bracelets, but it is highly desirable to so construct and assemble the various blocks as to economize the material entering thereinto, without sacrificing the strength of the structure to an extent which may result in the separation of the different blocks and a possible resulting loss of the bracelet.
WVith these conditions in mind, I have constructed a. bracelet wherein all of the blocks excepting those at the ends carrying the catch mechanism, are of the same construction, these blocks being joined together in a manner to secure the necessary degree of flexibility to permit the bracelet to assume an elliptical form. The structure of the hinge connection between adjoining blocks is such as to permit the convenient assembling of each block and the rapid and convenient assembly of different blocks to form the completed structure. The different parts entering into each block are so constructed as to facilitate a permanent joinder of these parts in a relation which will permit the proper fitting of the different blocks entering into the bracelet when assembling the same therein.
The invention consists primarily in a bracelet formed of a plurality of blocks each composed of a channeled member, a hinge socket piece having a transversely extending opening therein, carried by, and projecting beyond the end of said channeled member, said channeled member having at the other end of the side flanges thereof, openings adapted to register with the openings in the hinge socket piece of the adjoining member, and a hinge pin passing through the openings in said side flanges and through said hinge socket piece, whereby said blocks are flexibly connected, and in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts, as are hereinafter set forth and (lo-- scribed, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, I have illustrated a flexible block bracelet formed of a plurality of pivotally connected units, each comprising a block a of channeled material having substantially parallel ends, one end of said block havin soldered, or otherwise secured therein, a liinge socket piece 6 having a transversely extending elongated opening therein, the elongation of said opening being longitudinally of said block. This hinge socket piece in the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2, is formed of a flattened metal tube of the same material as the block a, and includes therein a flattened portion 1) adapted to seat upon the bottom of the channel in order to secure accuracy in the positioning of the piece, and to facilitate the assembling of said piece in relation to said block. The flattened portion Z) is preferably a small plate soldered to the tubular portion of the hinge piece.
Said hinge piece I) and the flattened portion 1) thereof, have a close fit with the side flanges of the block a, and the tubular portion thereof projects beyond the end of said block, so that in assembling a number of blocks in a completed bracelet, this projected portion of the hinge piece Z) Will enter between the flanges of the adjoining block, and
thus secure substantial continuity in theouter face of the bracelet. The side flanges a at the end thereof opposite the hinge piece Z2, have alined openings a therein,

Adjoining blocks a are pivotallycon-- nected by means of hinge pins- 0 having; a close driving. fit in the opening a and a loose fit in the opening in the hingepiece b. This loose fit between the hinge. pin cand the opening in the hinge socket piece, permits that. slight relative movement of adjoining blocks necessary to permit the de--' sired curvature of the completed bracelet in its entirety, the adjoining-blocksseparating slightly as the bracelet takes form, and
the edges of the side flanges 64' within the bracelet ultimately abutting so as to. limit the amount ofpivotal movement of said blocks. By this construction the degree of. flexibility of the bracelet is limitedto that necessary to give it form while in use,xthe curved structure, when theends arexunited, being substantially rigid, or suflieiently= so to prevent the-collapsingof the bracelet, or its losing the elliptical forindesired.

Inadditionto a substantialsav-ing of the 1' 1 3 0 material entering into each block, I am enabled, in a bracelet made in accordance with my invention, to produce each block with a substantial saving of labor, and yet re tain in a completed bracelet, an intrinsic value measured by that of the precious metal embodied therein. In other Words, a bracelet made in accordance with my invention, possesses all of the artistic and intrinsic values of flexible block bracelets wherein the structure of the blocks difi'ers from that of the blocks embodied in my invention, and in addition thereto, such a bracelet possesses greater uniformity of structure throughout, can be more conveniently produced, and possesses the same, or greater, strength than other forms of bracelets of the same general character.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the decorative characteristics of the bracelet, nor to other details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A bracelet formed of a plurality of blocks, each composed of a channeled member, a hinge socket piece having a transversely extending opening therein, carried by, and projecting beyond the end of, said channeled member, said channeled member having at the other end of the side flanges thereof, openings adapted to register with the opening in the hinge socket piece of the adjoining member, and a hinge pin passing through the openings in said side flanges and throughsaid hinge socket piece, whereby said blocks are flexibly connected.
2. A bracelet formed of a plurality of blocks, each composed of a channeled memmer having substantially parallel ends, and a hinge socket piece having a transversely extending opening therein carried by, and projecting beyond the end of, said channeled member, said opening being elongated longitudinally of said member, the side flanges of said channeled member adjacent the other end thereof, having openings therethrough adapted to register with the opening in the hinge socket piece of the adjoining member, and a hinge pin passing through the openings in said side flanges, and having a loose fit in the opening in the hinge socket piece of the adjoining block, whereby said blocks are flexibly coimected.
3. A bracelet formed of a plurality of blocks, each composed of a channeled member, and a hinge socket piece carried thereby comprising a flat plate adapted to bear upon the bottom of said channeled member and having a close fit with the side flanges thereof, and a tubular portion carried by said plate, the opening of said tubular portion extending transversely of, and pro ecting beyond the end of, said channeled member, the side flanges of said channeled member adjacent the other end thereof having openings therethrough adapted to register with the opening in said tubular portion of said adjoining block, and a hinge pin pass ing through the openings in said side flanges and the tubular portion of an adjoining block, whereby said blocks are flexibly connected.
4. A bracelet formed of a plurality of blocks, each composed of a channeled member, and a hin e socket piece carried thereby comprising a flat plate adapted to bear upon the bottom of said channeled member and having a close fit with the side flanges there of, and a tubular portion carried by said plate, the opening of said tubular portion extending transversely of, being elongated longitudinally of, and projecting beyond the end of, said channeled member, the side flanges of said channeled member adjacent the other end thereof having openings therethrough adapted to register with the opening in said tubular portion of said adjoining block, and a hinge pin passing through the openings in said side flanges, and having a loose fit in the opening in the hinge socket piece of the adjoining block, whereby said blocks are flexibly connected.
