Be it known that I, ERNEST G. Rnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful I1nprovements in Whistles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signals, horns, or whistles, operated from the exhaust of internal combustion engines, and is intended more particularly for use in connection with motor vehicles, motor boats, air-craft, and the like. T hisdevice may be attached in any suitable location but by preference will be attached as shown in the drawings to the exhaust manifold.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation showing the location of this device relative to the motor and steering-wheel;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same and the intake manifold;

To the exhaust manifold l is screwed the elbow 2 in the throat 3, of which is formed the annular shoulder 4, against which is pushed home one end of tube or cylinder 5, which contains spring 6 and rod 7. Bolt 8 passes through holes 9 in flange 10 of elbow 2, and through holes 11 in tube 5 and is secured in place by nut 12 which holds the device together.
Bolt 8 passes through a perforation 13 that runs longitudinally through throatpiece 14 and holds the same in place in throat 3 and relative to the end of tube 5.

which shoulder forn'is a seat for the edge 16 or plunger 17 which is attached to rod 7 by the eye 18 and cotter l9.
Within the hollow plunger 17 is wedged or fastened a flanged plate 20, adapted not only to hold the wall of the hollow plunger from bending inward, but also to forn'i a cup in the forward part of the said plunger 17 to receive the gases expelled through passage 21 in elbow 2 and through the restricted beveled opening in throat-piece 14:. The said escaping are thus caught in the said cup and forced out of whistle-opening 23 in tube it will be noticed that the gases escaping from passage 21 enter the beveled restricted passage 22 at the point where the same is larger, but the said passage gradually beeomes smaller.
This device when in use gives forth the pleasant note of a mocking-bird, or the like, but is sufiiciently distinct to form an adequate warning of danger, and has the advantage of being operated from the escap ing products of combustion which pass as gases through the exhaust manifold.
The warbling effect of this horn is due in part to the fact that the movement of the plunger 17 is under the control of the driver from the vicinity of the steering-wh eel 24s by means of cord 25 and rod 7, but is rendered more eiiicient and distinct by the tight closing of the exhaust through threat 3 of elbow 2, by reason of the overlapping and seating on shoulder 15 of the edge 16 of the hollow or cup-like plunger 17 under the impulsion of spring 6. A pull upon cord 25 overcomes the said spring pressure and the operator is able, alternately, to open and close opening or passage 22 and opening 23.
In the modified form of this device depicted in Figs. 6 to 9, the changes from the construction hereinabove described consist chiefly in substituting for the full-round edge 16 of the plunger 17, a mere lip 26 to cooperate with throat-piece let and to close opening 22. When the plunger 17 is provided with the lip 26 instead of the circumferential edge 16, the dimensions of the shoulder 15 will be made similar to the di mensions of the lip 26, and the said shoulder 15 in the modified form shown in Figs. 6 to 9, may, if desired, take the form of a bevel opposite to the bevel of lip 26, or the said parts may be given any suitable form. Lip 26 in any form closes passage 22 in any form- It will be observed that plate 20 produces a fore-shortening within the hollow plunger 17 and that as the location of plate 20 therein can be altered at will, the tone or tune of the whistle can be regulated.
The term cup-shaped as applied to the plunger is to be understood as including either the more strictly cup-shaped plunger of the preferred form, or the plunger of the modified form, in which lip 26 is used to close passage 22 through throat-piece 14:, while the cup is formed underneath the same and by plate 20 and the inside of the wall of tube 5.
The lip 26 enters passage 22 and is, there.
fore, more eflicient to choke the escape of gases when that is desired. On the other hand, the bevel 27 permits the freer outflow of gases when. passage 22 is open.
Having thus described this invention, I hereby reserve the benefit of all changes in form, arrangement, order, or use of parts, as it is evident that many minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the following claim.
I claim- A whistle of the character described comprising a hollow member formed with an enlarged annular open end, the opposite walls of which are formed with alined openings,
an elongated tubular member seated in the enlarged open end of the hollow member and abutting against the shoulder formed by the enlargement, the elongated tubular member having a lateral opening adjacent the enlarged end of the hollow member and also formed with alined openings, a plug seated in the inner end of the elongated tubular member and formed with a transverse opening, the plug engaging against the shoulder formed at the inner terminal of the enlarged open end of the hollow member, the plug having a notch inclining outwardly to form a restricted outlet adjacent the lateral opening in the tubular member, a bolt extending through the alined openings in the hollow member, the tubular member and the opening in the plug to hold the parts together, the outer end of the plug having an annular shoulder, a hollow plunger in the elongated tubular member, the plunger having one end to provide a chamber, the end of the plunger normally engaging the annular shoulder on the plug, means for holding the plunger against the shoulder, and means to retract the plunger to uncover the lateral opening for sounding the whistle.
