FIREPLACE-DAMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,396.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, CHRISTIAN URs'rRoM, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplace- Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fireplace dampers.
The object of the invention is "to provide specific means for conveniently operating a damper from the inside of the fireplace, and arranging the mechanism between the operating handle and the damper in such manner as to be readily operated within the fireplace.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a damper and its operating mechanism mounted in connection with a fireplace.
Referring more particularly to the drawing numeral 1 indicates the sides of a fireplace and 2 a back wall. My dam-per is pivotally mounted intermediate the walls 1 and comprises half damper members 3 and 4: which are adjustably connected together by a screw 5 which passes through a slotted.
hole 6 in half member 4 and engages a threaded hole in half member 3. The damper is pivoted by means of trunnions 7 one of which is fastened to an arm 8 on its end which is outside of the wall 1. A right angular rod 9 is pivoted to the free end of arm 8 and passes through an opening 10 in wall 1 so as to be accessible from the inside of the fireplace. The position of the damper with respect to the throat of the fireplace is regulated by moving the hand rod 9. It will be apparent that applicants damper can be placed within the fireplace after it is built by first drilling holes for the trunnions 7 and adjusting and securing tllie halves of the damper after they are in ace.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves toothers skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
In combination, a fireplace provided in one side wall with a vertical slot, and in both side walls with alined bearings, a sectional damper extending across the fireplace and having the adjacent ends of the sections overlapping, means for adjustably fastening the overlapping ends of the damper sections together, a trunnion on each damper section, said trunnions being mounted in the alined bearings, an arm on the end of one of the trunnions, and a right angular hand rod having its 'upper end pivoted to one end of the arm and its lower end extended through the slot in the side Wall to be accessible from the inside of the fireplace, whereby when the lower end of the hand rod is vertically moved in its slot, the damper will be opened or closed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN URSTROM.
