ADJUSTABLE LEVEL-STAND.
Application filed July 26, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I DELFORD ,HATCH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Alta, in the county of Buena Vista and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Level- Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements. in adjustable level stands, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and e'fiicient device of this character which provides a level supporting device adapted to be adjustably mounted at the corner of buildings, and adjustable to various positions.
Another object of the invention is to rovide a device of this character whic is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be herein re ferred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation view of the device;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the connection between the standard and level support.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 designates the supporting standard which is a vertical rod having one end thereof pointed as shown at 2, and adapted to be driven into the ground. Slidably mounted on the standard 1, is a collar 3, adapted to be held in various adjusted positions by means of a set screw 4, the said collar 3 being adjustable vertically, so as to be ositioned at Various grade levels.
. he connecting means employed in this device, is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, comprises a T-shaped connecting portion 5 having a tubular head 6, which is slidably mounted upon the vertical standard 1, and which is provided with a set screw 7, so as to lock said head against ro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tary movement in its various vertically adjusted positions. The shank portion 8 of the connection 5 projects laterally there from, and from the standard 1, and the same is adapted to form a support for the level supporting means, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
.The level supporting means employed in this device, comprises a platform, formed of a single strip and designated by the numeral 9, said platform having a depending apertured ear 10 intermediate its ends, adapted to be slidably mounted on the. shank portion 8 of the connection 5. The depending ear is provided with a locking set screw 11, the purpose of which is obvious. The platform or strip is adapted to receive a level thereon, and the said support is slidably and rotatably mounted on the projecting shank 8, the same being locked in various adjusted positions, by means of the set screw 11.
To enable the level that is adapted to be positioned on the platform 9 to be more accurately adjusted I have provided at one end of said platform a depression 12 having a vertically adjustable portion 13 mounted therein, adjustable by means of a thumb screw 14 which projects through the bottom of the depression and is engaged with the bottom of said movable portion. This depression 12 and the ortion contained therein extend transverse y across one end of the platform, so that one end of the level is adapted to be adjusted according to the desired degree, to obtain the accurate adjustment necessary.
In operation, the vertical standard rod 1 is positioned in the ground at the lowermost corner of a building. The collar 3 is then adjusted thereon at the grade line, and the T-shaped connection 5 is swung at the desired angle. The lower edge of the head portion 6 of this connection will rest upon the collar 3, and when the connection is positioned at the desired angle, the set screw 7 that is carried by the head is adjusted to lock the same insaid position. The level is supported on the platform 9, that is rotatably and sildably mounted on the shank ortion 8 of the T-shaped connection 5.
his, adjustable platform will permit the level to be adjusted as accurately as possible, and to permit a finer adjustment, the transversely extending vertically adjustable por tion at one end of the platform may be brought into play. By this means one end of the level may be raised slightly to carry out the desired results, Which could not perhaps be accomplished by the adjustment of the platform itself.
The platform upon which the level is supported on this device, is adapted to be the device as embodying a specific structure,
I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention what ncense I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
. 1. A stand of the character described including an upright, a level-supporting platform adjustably arranged on' the upright and having a transverse depression formed therein adjacent one end, and a strip arranged in said depression and adapted for vertical adjustment with relation to the platform. I
2. A stand of the character described including an upright, a T-shaped connection having a tubular head slidable and adjustable on said upright, a level supporting platform adjustably mounted on the projecting shank portion of the "IT-shaped con-v nection, said platform having a transversely disposed way formed therein adjacent one end, and an adjustable piece arranged in said way and capable of vertical movement with relation to said platform.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
DELFORD HATCH.
