To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. OARDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to ironing-boards, and especially folding ironing-boards, and has for [0 one of its objects to provide an ironing-board which when not in use may be folded back against the wall within an ornamental closed cabinet.

Another object of my invention is to provide an ironing-board attached to and foldable against the wall, which board may be let down at right angles to the wall or at an angle orparallel to the wall, right or left.

These objects Iaccomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter more fully described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like figures indicate like parts in all the views.

My invention consists of acabiuet 1 of suitable depth, screwed against or built into the wall a suitable distance above the floor. The

5 door 2 of the cabinet is provided with suitable hinges and fastening and has its outsidedivided into three panels, which may be ornamented as desiredas, for instance, pictures in the upper and lower and a mirror in 0 the middle panel. Across the lower part of the back of the cabinet 1 is secured a strip 3. Hinged to the strip 3 is the heel of an ironing-board 4, divided transversely into two portions. The heel portion 5 has its top cut away to form the shoulder 6, equal in height to the thickness of the toe portion 7. The rear end of the toe portion 7 is formed complementary to the shoulder 6. The toe portion 7 is secured on top the heel portion 5 by a bolt 8, the head of which is sunk level with the top of the toe portion 7 and which passes through aslot 9 in such toe portion 7 and then through a hole 10 in the heel portion 5 and is secured by a thumbnut 11. Secured across the lower surface of the toe portion '7 near its front end is a cleat l2, and just in rear of such cleat 12 are hinged a pair of legs 13, which support the forward end of the board 4 when in use and is then braced against the cleat 12. To give additional support to the board 4, especially when in use at an angle to or parallel with the wall, a detachable leg 14 is provided. The leg 14 has a fiat head provided'with a bolt-hole and is secured beneath the forward end of the heel portion 5 when in use by a bolt passing through the hole 14 in the heel portion, the head of the bolt being flush with the upper surface of the heel portion 5 and said bolt secured by a thumb-nut 15. The toe of the board 4 is provided on its under side with a button 16, by which it may be held in place in the cabinet 1 when not in use.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The cabinet 1 being opened, the button 16 is turned, releasing the board 4, which turns downward and outward, the legs 13 falling into place as the board 4 descends. If it is to be used at right angles to the wall, the toe portion 7 is placed with its rear end against the shoulder 6 and the thumb-nut ll screwed up tight. If it is desired to use it at another angle to or parallel with the wall, the thumb nut 11 is loosened, the toe portion 7 drawn out, the bolt 8 passing along the slot 9 until the rear end of the toe portion 7 clears the shoulder 6, the toe portion 7turned as much as desired, and the thumb-nut 11 again screwed up. In this latter position, of course, the angle made by the heel portion 5 and the too 0 portion 7 renders the board 4 less stable; Hence the leg 14 is brought into requisition and fastened beneath the forward part of the heel portion 5.

Having thus described myiuvention, what 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A folding ironing-board, consisting of a support, outer and inner parts, and means for supporting said parts, the inner part hinged to said support and having a shoulder, and the outer part havinga longitudinal slot to allow it to be moved out of contact or away from said shoulder, means for pivoting said outer part on said inner part adapted to engage said, slot and hold the outer part against the shoulder of and also at difierent points on the inner part, substantially as shown and described.

2. A folding ironing-board having a heelpiece hinged to a support, said heel-piece having its top at some distance from the support, cut'down to form a shoulder equal to the thickness of the toe-piece, and provided with a detachable leg at'its outer end, and a toe-piece, adapted to be pivotally secured on said heelpiece, provided with hinged legs near the front end, scribed.

3. An ornamental closed wall-cabinet, and an ironing-board, adapted to be folded into said cabinet, consisting of two portions, the heel portion hinged in the bottom of said cabinet and cut away on. top to form a shoulder equal to the thickness of the toe portion, I ,1
