Description

J. M. FARNHAM.
Improvement in Woven Wire-Fabrics.
Patented Aug. 27,1872.
Zara 72 3:- (r sul'xc'x ov AM P/IOTOUTHGORAP/IIF 5'6. Ml SHER/V53 PROCESS} UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICEJ JOHN M. FARNHAM, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOVEN-WlRE FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,796, dated August 27, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, JOHN M. FARNHAM, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabrics of Woven Wire, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of such fabric. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of such fabric woven double. Fig. 4 is an end view of the fabric shown in Fig. 3.
The woven-wire fabric referred to is used for beds, sofas, chairs, and the like, and the kinds in use heretofore have been composed either wholly or in great part of cylindrical spiral coils of wire.
My improvement consists in making these spiral coils oval in shape instead of cylindrical. By this means I-save nearly or quite one quarter of the amount of wire needed to make a fabric of a given size. I also produce a fabric which has a more nearly even and flat surface, and which can more readily be rolled than ed with wire fabrics as single weave, the intertwined coils being single.
These fabrics can be woven double, triple, &c., and are then known as double-weave, triple-weave, &c. The double-weave, composed wholly of oval spiral coils, is shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In a previous patent issued to me I have shown three oval spiral coils interlaced with circular spiral coilsy and it is not intended to claim in this pate'ntthe use'of oval spirals in every possible combination, but only when the fabric is composed wholly of oval spirals. Fur-
