CONCRETE-FORM.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Original application filed June 12, 1915, Serial No. 33,799. Divided and this application filed September r13, 1916. Serial No. 119,847.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I', STEWART R. MGKAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Concrete- Forms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to forms employed 'in the erection of concrete walls, such as enter into the construction Of buildings, and more particularly to forms comprising spaced vertical posts with panels extending between and cooperating therewith to provide a support for the soft concrete material.
vThe invention relates more particularly to the construction of the panels; also to a cooperating construction of panels andposts whereby the panels may be eificiently secured to the osts and may be conveniently reversed shou d occasion require; also to a cooperating construction of posts, panels, and clampin means. The invention covered by this app ication is a division of my co-pending application No. 33,799, led June 12, 1915. f f
` In the drawings forming part hereof,
Figure 1 represents a perspective sectional view through a post and the adjacent ends of two panels together with the clamping means; Fig. 2 a sectional plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a plan viewv showing the manner in which several panels and posts are connected in series; and Fig. 4 a detail in plan of a modified form of panel. Y
Describing the parts by reference characters, 1 denotes one of the posts generally, the Vpost being preferably of metal and being hollow. Y As indicated in Fig. 3, the posts will be spaced a suiicient distance apart to receive the panels 2 therebetween. For the purpose of maintaining the posts in properlyspaced relation, a suitable number of ranger rods 3 may be employedxwhich rods maybe connected tothe posts 1n any convenient manner. l
yThe panels illustrated herein comprise each a wooden body 2b having a metal sheathing 2a thereon. The wooden body 2b is oppositely beveled at each end thereof,"as indicated at 2c and the sheathing is shaped to conform to the beveled ends of the wooden l body, the meeting` edges of the beveled portions 2d of the sheathing being'flanged to provide a lip 6 of doubled metal. This lip, as will be pointed out hereinafter, coperates with seats formed therefor on the posts and each beveled surface is adapted to cooperate with the. correspondingly beveled portion of a post.
Each post is substantially wedge-shaped insection providing a widened face 4a`from which there extend; the oppositely beveled portions 4 Providing beveled surfaces complementary to and `coperating with the beveled surfaces 2d on the sheathing. The length of the beveled surfaces 4 is substantiallyfthe same asthe length of the beveled surfaces 2d and the beveledsurfaces 4 merge with ledges or shoulders 5 extending parallel with the lips 6. From the ledges 5 thereprojects an rextension 5a, the opposite sides lof saidy extension being preferably parallel as shown and the extension being U-shaped in section. The length of the beveled surfaces 4 being equal to or substantially equal tothe length of the'beveled surfaces-2d when the panels are applied and clamped in position upon the posts, the lips 6 will engage the ledges 5 with the inner or work-facing sides of the panels andthe inner or work-facing ,side of the post forming a plane. I
To secure the panels in place, I prefer to employ a clamp such as illustrated herein, said clamp comprising a`U-shaped yoke '7 having arms 8 pivoted thereto, as shown at 9. To secure the yclamp to the U-shaped extension 5a of a post, an arm lO'is pivoted between the branches of the extensionr 5a, as indicated at 11, said arm projecting through a slot at the rear end of said extension, as indicated at 5", and being itself provided with a slot 11aL near'the rear 'or outer end thereof. This arm vis adapted to extend through a slot 7a in the outerV end of theclamp 7. Coperating with the slot'll1 is a wedge key 13 which'is adapted Vto bear upon the rear end ofthe slot 11a. Withthis construction, it will be" evident that, when the wedge key is driven home, the clampis By reference'to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the ranger rods 3 may be secured to the posts .l lby means `of arms 14 .extending through slots in the fU-shaped extensions 55a of the posts, each arm having a head V14n within each post, and each arm being yprovided with a slot which is adapted to receive a Lwedge, key 133, the armsfextending'through slots in the ranger rods 3. In other words, I am able to employ the same style of wedge keys for securing the ranger rods to the posts that `are employed for the purpose ofy securing-the panels in place. .n
In Fig. 4 there is shown -a modified form of panel wherein .the wooden body or filler 38 v` isk provided .at each end witha single beveled .surface ,extending entirely thereacross. The sheathing .consists of an inner or work-facing plate 34 andan .outer or rear .plate35 which covers the'outer or rear faoeof the wooden body or filler, being beveled at zits ends Vytocorrespondto the inclination.ofthebeveled.endsofthe filler, as indicated at 34a. Theplates .35 are extended beyond-,the linner .ends of their yrespective fillers and the inner .ends of the plates are bent laterally to provide at eachend of a panela `lip 36 of doubled metal. This construction of panel differs from that shown in Figs. `l-B in that the panels are not reversible.
y In .both forms of my invention.illustrated herein, the panels andthe posts are provided with coperating beveled surfaces whereby awedging action is secured between the `posts and the `panels when the latter are secured `inplace. Furthermore, fin both [forms of my invention, .the panels are provided with lateral Iextensions or .flips which .are adapted to engage the ledges or shoulders of the posts and, when the panels are seated,`the inner or working sides of the panels .and the inner or working sides of the posts forma substantially continuous planesurface, the lips serving to support the panels in thisV definite .relation to the posts. It lwill be evident that, .when the concretehas set and the clamps have been released :and the ypanels are moved outwardly or away from the conc'rete, vthe panels will immediately -disengage the posts andan increasingelearance will be ,provided'between the 4panels and .their seats on the posts lThis construction enableswthe .panels to ybe removed .without hindrance and without adhesion between the panelsand the posts due to the presence oficoncrete between their engaging surfaces. f IHaving thus described my invention, whatI-claimis: y l,
